2009 Depth Chart Released

The jury is out. Pete Carroll announced today his depth chart going into the huddle. Of course in traditional Carroll fashion, the competition for starting positions will continue throughout Summer workouts. But the Spring depth charts typically hold strong resemblance to the final list, come start of the football season.

Heberer back on guard

<!--start image--><!-- end image-->Preparation for the Rose Bowl is in full swing for the Trojans, but just because the season is coming to a close doesn't mean the competition slows down. Sophomore Zack Heberer has been getting most of the reps this week at right guard, fighting to retain the starting spot he lost after being injured earlier in the seaso

McKnight, Hazelton, Havili Updates

Joe McKnight participated in some of Tuesday's practice but was held out of some parts by trainers as a precautionary measure. He said he still feels some soreness on the side of his foot but will play against Arizona.
Vidal Hazelton practiced and took a hit even though the coaches did not want him to face any contact. He will see a doctor tonight but is expected to be cleared to play.
Stanley Havili is nursing a sore ankle which might be an issue. Zack Heberer said he is about 95 percent but is now fighting to regain his spot from Alex Parsons.

Welcome back

Pete Carroll was eager to point out that the Trojans were looking replenished on Monday.

"A bunch of guys returned to the practice field," he said. "I don't know if you could tell, but it was like a busload of guys came in today! It was kinda' fun and it feels different -- the energy about it. Those guys were all excited to get back out ... that should help us keep the week competitive."

Here's who practiced after being injured and/or missing at least part of last week's practice:

Jordon Cameron

Butch Lewis

Zack Heberer

Jimmy Miller

Joe McKnight

Vidal Hazelton

Everson Griffen

Brian Cushing

Kaluka Maiava

Chris Pousson

After listing out all the names, Carroll mused, "It feels like there are some more guys popping out!"

No word on when Gerald Washington will be back (he was out with an ankle injury).

USC football: More on McKnight’s toe

Guard Zack Heberer missed USC’s past two games after suffering turf toe at Oregon State on Sept. 25.

Regarding Joe McKnight’s case, which had him in a boot Monday, USC coach Pete Carroll said: “This is a hard one to tell. Obviously this is a real critical and painful injury for a running back particularly, but it’s hard on everybody.”

With Stafon Johnson (illness) and Allen Bradford (hip) also missing practice, redshirt freshman Broderick Green moved up to the No. 2 tailback spot behind C.J. Gable.

Smooth sailing in mock game

A number of USC's marquee players played little in Thursday's mock game at the Coliseum. Most importantly for the Trojans, nobody was hurt and everything seemed to go smoothly. Despite some setbacks earlier this month, Coach Pete Carroll said, "I don't think we've ever been this healthy at this time of year."

The headline injury in training camp was a dislocated kneecap suffered two weeks ago by starting quarterback Mark Sanchez. After seeing him throw in 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 drills, Carroll was pleased with Sanchez's progress and said that he could be practicing at full speed in the next couple of days. That would allow Sanchez, who watched the mock game from the sideline, to participate in game-week preparations.

Asked about his other quarterbacks, Mitch Mustain and Aaron Corp, Carroll wasn't saying much without watching the film. "There were no major breakdowns in communication ... we made it through, I think this was just another day for those guys growing."

Sophomore tailback Joe McKnight appeared fine despite dealing with a series of random and presumably painful injuries over the last couple of weeks.

There was some concern over how sharp USC looked on the lines, with a few penalties and turnovers sprinkled in. More coverage after the jump.

CFN's Unit Rankings

College Football News ranks the different units from around the country. USC makes a splash on defense but not surprisingly they struggle to get a lot of recognition on offense. I am not going to comment on this too much as this is pretty accurate from an SC standpoint. This is more for just general knowledge.

Safeties Kevin Ellison and Taylor Mays are among six players with starting experience. Even without current pros Sedrick Ellis and Lawrence Jackson, the defensive line will be just fine. On the outside, speedy Everson Griffen is good enough to make folks forget about Jackson. On the inside, senior Fili Moala is about to shed his anonymity while making a strong push for All-American honors and a spot in the first round of next year’s NFL Draft.

Sanchez got the nod in April, but he got hurt and is questionable for the start of the season. Mustain has done nothing but impress the staff since transferring from Arkansas. Whoever gets the ball will have gobs of speed and explosiveness surrounding him. After getting a taste of action as a freshman, RB Joe McKnight is on the tarmac and preparing for national lift-off. The receivers are a year older, with the size, athleticism, and addition of former Hog Damian Williams to dominate opposing secondaries. The line loses four starters, putting the onus on sophomores Kristofer O’Dowd, Butch Lewis, and Zack Heberer to perform like vets.

There’s more than enough returning talent and former prep All-Americans to run that streak to three, although a few more interceptions would be nice. In Kevin Ellison and Taylor Mays, USC is home to a couple of hard-hitting enforcers with All-America potential. If Josh Pinkard is even close to where he was a couple of years ago, no program in the country will be able to match them at the position. The Trojans are so quick and strong up front, opposing backs are rarely able to get to the second level. Of course, not that things get any easier there.
The Thin Red Line

Make that a thin cardinal line protecting USC's backfield, which also happens to be hamstrung by injuries. While every team looses players during the season (Cal lost to Oregon State without their starting QB, Stanford beat USC without their's), can anybody in the nation match up with the Trojan's carnage?

From USC football's weekly press release:

Already this season, 11 starters or projected starters have missed
games with injuries: S-CB Josh Pinkard (6 games), C Matt Spanos (3
games), TB C.J. Gable (3 games), LB Brian Cushing (3 games), CB

O’Dowd (2 games), QB John David Booty (1 game), CB Cary Harris (1
game), WR Patrick Turner (1 game) and TB Chauncey Washington (1 game).

Also, a number of key backups have missed games due to injuries: CB Kevin Thomas (6 games), OG-C Nick Howell (6 games), TB Broderick Green (6 games), TE Jimmy Miller (5 games), LB Chris Galippo (3 games), TB Stafon Johnson (2 games), WR Travon Patterson (2
games), OT Butch Lewis (2 games), OT Charles Brown (1 game), QB Mark
Sanchez (1 game), S Will Harris (1 game) and CB Vincent Joseph (1
game). Pinkard, Gable, Thomas, Howell, Green, Galippo, Patterson have
season-ending injuries.

The impact of these injuries has been enormous. The team could be one fractured finger or a healed foot away from a 6-0 record.

Looking ahead to Notre Dame, here's more from the Sports Information Department:

POSSIBLE: TB Stafon Johnson (foot), OT Sam Baker (hamstring), S Kevin
Ellison (nose), OT Charles Brown (ankle), LB Rey Maualuga (hip), OG
Zack Heberer (shoulder), QB John David Booty (finger), LB Brian Cushing
(ankle), OG Chilo Rachal (knee), CB Shareece Wright (hamstring), C
Kristofer O’Dowd (kneecap), TE Jimmy Miller (back).

OUT: TB C.J. Gable (abdomen), WR Travon Patterson (foot), LB Chris
Galippo (back), S-CB Josh Pinkard (knee), OG-C Nick Howell (hernia), TB
Broderick Green (foot), CB Kevin Thomas (shoulder), OT Martin Coleman
(shoulder), DE Trey Henderson, WR Damian Williams (shoulder).

That ignores all the players who are just dinged up (see Jeff Byers, pictured above) and leaves out two recently announced injuries to Kyle Moore and Terrell Thomas (hamstring).

Here's what John David Booty's hand looked like after practice today. He didn't throw at all, but he's supposed to try tomorrow with a glove.

First spring practice report

Booty and Sanchez both looked good.

Hershel Dennis, the most likely starting tailback, injured his hamstring and sat out the practice. Petros Papadakis says while there certainly is new talent for the Trojans to tap into, Hershel Dennis is the only one who can pick up blitzes and understand the offense.

5-star recruit, and now a junior, Whitney Lewis looked good running the ball though.

Ryan Powdrell also saw some action in the backfield along with Brandon Hancock and Joey Adewale.

S Antwine Perez sported a beard and played on the first string defense. We love this guy. Look for him to make an immediate "impact".

The other freshman in attendance, but on the sidelines: RB Stafon Johnson, OL Zack Heberer, DL Alex Parsons, WR Travon Patterson, RB Kenny Ashley and DB Alfred Rowe.
