Week 2: PAC-10 Steps Up

Devon Pollard, TrojanWire

The Pac-10 stepped up this weekend, snapping the nation's 1 and 2 longest winning streaks as well as handing Michigan its most lop-sided loss since 1968...and all without USC. Yes, while the Trojans were taking an early bye, the rest of the pack was cleaning the college football floors.

They are said to have the toughest schedule in the country and they are rising to the occasion. Washington (not state, mind you) cut the longest win streak in college football, pulling a huge upset over #22 Boise State. Second to last in the Pac-10 standings in 2006, Washington, led by redshirt freshman Jake Locker, is showing the ability to make big plays and win big games.

Look out Pac-10, Washington might not be the pushover that everyone had expected.

After Washington upset Boise State, the BYU Cougars officially had the longest win streak in the country. That is until UCLA came into the picture. The Bruins held off the aggressive Cougars 27-17, capitalizing on a late BYU fumble.

Now I want to make one thing clear: I loathe the Bruins. But I still hope they win big. They play Oregon and Cal at home, so there's a possibility of that happening. I hope they win all the merry way to the coliseum, with national title hopes sparkling in their eyes. They've beat USC before - they will be confident they can do it again. And that's when USC will crush them like roaches. The Trojans will head to Louisiana and UCLA will lose miserably at the Rose Bowl in front of a national audience on January 1rst. Happy New Year to All!

If Michigan was depressed last week, they're straight manic by now. This is after Oregon handed Michigan its worst defeat since President Nixon was elected to office. And in the Big House no less. And Oregon made it look easy. The Duck's quarterback Dennis Dixon was a duel threat with 292yards/3tds passing and 76yards/1td rushing.

The Trojans head to Eugene on October 27th. USC will have to improve on its run defense in order to cut Oregon's offense in half. Then they'll have to put a lot of pressure on Dixon to disrupt his rhythm, something Michigan was never able to accomplish. One sack will just not do...

The rest of the Pac:

Cal held off Colorado State, 34-28
Washington State killed San Diego State, 45-17
Arizona beat NAU, 45-24
Arizona State overcame Colorado, 33-14

The only Pac-10 loss came from the pathetic Oregon State Beavers who were blown out by Cincinatti, 34-3. Way to represent...

USC and Stanford had bye-weekends.
