From a practice this week, here were the 40 times for USC's wide receivers:
1) Ronald Johnson 4.43
2) Damian Williams 4.46
3) David Ausberry 4.48
4) Brandon Carswell 4.49
5) Vidal Hazelton 4.52
6) Garrett Green 4.56
7) Patrick Turner 4.64
Track star Travon Patterson, who did not run, would probably be the fastest. And speed will not play much of a factor if the ball is not delivered or the ball is not caught (something that has plagued USC in the last year).

Hazelton makes a one-handed grab in the 2007 opener. Frank Bellino/Riverside Press-Enterprise
Sophomore Vidal Hazelton, who hauled in 50 receptions for 540-yards in 2007, has undergone stomach surgery to repair two muscle tears - according to Press-Telegram. The lanky, 6-3 wide-receiver was sometimes criticized for a lack of explosive speed during his breakout season, despite averaging 10.8 yards per catch. But whatever perceived "deficit" he may have had, it was likely caused by a nagging internal injury. And somehow despite the pain, Hazelton managed to man-up, play through and make major contributions to the Trojan offense.
Hazelton played last season with what was believed to be a groin injury but it turned out to be multiple stomach tears. He is expected to be fully recovered for spring practice, which begins next month.
Hazelton finished the 2007 season third on the USC's receiver-roster in total yards, only behind TE Fred Davis (881 yds) and Patrick Turner (569 yds). With Fred Davis likely to go first round in the NFL draft, a healthy Hazelton will likely factor in as a strong component in the Trojans' 2008 receiving-strategy. Expect another grab like the one pictured above in the '08 opener against Virginia.

While you were enjoying your Thanksgiving feast, ASU's Rudy Carpenter was eating a mouthful of turf.
I left the TV for about a minute to get my second-plate of Thanksgiving dinner sometime in the third quarter. By the time I got back to the TV, Arizona State had their backup quarterback in the game, and their starter, Rudy Carpenter, was on the sideline cursing and spitting up blood.
It was that sort of night for Carpenter, who was sacked six times. Four of those sacks belonged to defensive-end Lawrence Jackson, who delivered the lip-busting hit in the third. #11 USC Trojans went on to beat the #6 ASU Sun Devils, 44-24.

It was a dark and stormy night. Rain drenched the 72,516 sell-out crowd. The ball was water-logged. Fumbles were lost. Tackles were slipped. The field was slick. And Cal's defense again and again saw a dark figure pounding out of the backfield. Guess who?
For the Bear-D the game went a little something like this: See Chauncey Washington. See Chauncey Washington run. See Chauncey Washington run past you. Wave goodbye to Chauncey Washington. Step and Repeat.

Last season John David Booty suffered his first upset loss in Corvallis Oregon at the hands of the Oregon State Beavers. As fate would have it this season, Booty would come back after sitting out three games with a broken finger just in time to face the Beavers at the Los Angeles Coliseum. But history would be on his side, as Oregon State had not beat USC at home in some 46 years...Make that 47. Yes, John David Booty led the Trojans to an easy 24-3 win over the Beavers.
It wasn't the Trojan offense that wowed the homecoming crowd, but rather the defense that put on the best show. Although Oregon State came into the game ranked first in the entire nation in sacks, it was USC's defensive squad who showed their true colors, hitting hard and taking names at every opportunity. Mainly the name of OSU quarterback Sean Canfield, who was terrorized by a Trojan-D that recorded nine sacks.
While much of Southern California burned, the USC Trojans were lighting a fire up in South Bend, Indiana. Mark Sanchez was throwing touchdown strikes like lighting, Vidal Hazelton was smoking Notre Dame's defense and Joe McKnight was burning up the field.
Feeling Green. Not even Notre Dame's green throw-back jerseys would give them the luck they needed to keep their quarterback out of the jaws of Sedrick Ellis.
It was a historic day for the Irish and one they would likely wish to forget. The USC Trojans beat Notre Dame 38-0 Saturday, in what has become the worse loss suffered by the Fighting Irish against the Trojans in their 79-year rivalry. And to pile it on it was the Trojans' sixth-straight win over the Irish, setting a new school record.
Backup quarterback Mark Sanchez could add another notch to his belt, after leading to the Trojans to a successful second-straight win as a starter. Sanchez replaced once Heisman-hopeful John David Booty, who has been resting his broken finger since USC's upset loss to Stanford weeks earlier.

Mark Saxon, OC Register QUARTERBACK Grade: B+ Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian scaled back the ambitions of the passing game and it worked to perfection.
