He's the quarterback of the No. 1 team in college football. I think the Heisman goes to the best player, and it’d be hard to argue that he’s not." Actually, it's fairly easy to argue: Florida is relying far more on its dominant defense to make up for a good-not-great offense averaging 50 fewer yards and 16 fewer points in SEC games than it did in 2008, and Tebow is well behind Ryan Mallett as the league's best statistical passer. But don't let semantics get in the way: Tebow will be in New York, because his exclusion from the proceedings will only hasten the horrors of the tribulation. The Downtown Athletic Club makes its decisions based on the relatively peaceful continuity of human civilization, not stats. [Palm Beach Post]

About the Poll

The HeismanPundit.com Heisman Poll is made up of 13 Heisman voters from across the country. They vote for five players each week. Tabulations are made on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis, with five points awarded for a first-place vote, four points for a second-place vote and so on. Last year’s final Heismanpundit poll was the most accurate in the country, picking five of the top six finishers in the Heisman vote, including the winner.

Members of the panel include: Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel, Teddy Greenstein and Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune, Olin Buchanan and Tom Dienhart of Rivals.com, Jenni Carlson of The Oklahoman, Bruce Feldman of ESPN.com, J.B. Morris of ESPN the Magazine, Austin Murphy, B.J. Schecter and Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated, plus Dick Weiss of the New York Daily News.

Chris Huston of HeismanPundit.com coordinates and also votes in the poll.

HP’s Thoughts

Mark Ingram has taken a commanding lead in the race and he should stay there for at least another week as Alabama uses a bye in preparation for LSU on Nov. 7. It appears Tim Tebow’s quest for a second Heisman is in major jeopardy unless he can turn things around soon. In the meantime, Colt McCoy and Jimmy Clausen have gained ground and one of them should emerge as the quarterback alternative to Ingram. October has been a rough month for most of the Heisman field and, as a result, it looks like this race could go down to the wire.

Heisman Game of the Week

No. 3 Texas at No. 13 Oklahoma State–Preseason favorite McCoy had a strong outing against Missouri last week and might be back on track after a rather erratic first half of the season. The Cowboys are the last ranked team on the Texas schedule, so it’s vital that McCoy play well–Heisman voters will be watching. It’s also a golden opportunity for McCoy to whittle away at Ingram’s lead while ‘Bama is on that bye week.

Player to Watch

Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska–It’s been 18 seasons since a defensive tackle finished among the top five in the Heisman vote. That player was Steve Emtman of Washington. Suh has a chance to join him in that elite group if he keeps playing like he has been. Suh is amazingly active for an interior player, leading the Cornhuskers (or tying for the lead) in 10 defensive categories, including tackles (44), tackles for loss (10), sacks (4), pass breakups (7), interceptions (1) and blocked field goals (2).

This Week in Heisman History

Unbeaten Ole Miss held a 3-0 lead over unbeaten LSU five minutes into the fourth quarter on Halloween night, 1959. A Jake Gibbs punt was fielded at the LSU 11-yard line by Tiger halfback Billy Cannon, who proceeded to wiggle his way through numerous tacklers en route to a miraculous 89-yard return for a touchdown. The score turned out to be the difference in LSU’s classic 7-3 victory and it clinched Cannon’s eventual Heisman triumph.

Kiffin, Fearful of Penalty, Didn't Run Another Play

How distrustful are Southeastern Conference coaches of league officials? At the moment, it's off the chart.

Tennessee's Lane Kiffin acknowledged that he decided against running another play before his team set up for a field goal that would have beaten Alabama because he was fearful officials would have found another way to penalize his team.

Tennessee was one of the nation's least-penalized teams entering
Saturday's game, but was flagged eight times for 68 yards. Alabama,
which had been flagged 10 times for 113 yards the previous Saturday
against South Carolina, was penalized only once for 10 yards.

"You run another play and you throw an interception or they throw another flag on us — I wasn't going to let the refs lose the game for us there and some magical flag appear," Kiffin said.

Instead, Kiffin sent in Daniel Lincoln to attempt a 44-yard field goal on the final play. It was blocked by Terrence Cody.

The beefy Alabama noseguard then took off his helmet and ran up the field to celebrate while the ball was still in play. Check the video.

"If a play's still going, you can't take your helmet off," Kiffin said. "A guy throws his helmet as the ball's still live. He throws his helmet and then two of their guys go and recover the ball. It's a 15-yard penalty, and you kick again."

Kiffin knew what was coming next.

"I'm sure we'll get one of those letters that mean nothing, that [Arkansas coach] Bobby [Petrino] got last week, but Florida and Alabama live on,'' Kiffin said.

Kiffin's letter arrived Monday. Mississippi State's Dan Mullen was also reprimanded.

If Kiffin is reprimanded one more time this year, he will be suspended by the SEC. Fortunately, he has assistant Ed Orgeron to carry on the fight.

Orgeron, the Mississippi coach from 2005-07, let the officials have it Monday night during an appearance before the Knoxville Quarterback Club.

"Seems like some people get the calls and some people don't," Orgeron said. "I've been in this league and I've been a part of that. Whether that's true or not, you can never prove that.

"I do know this: there were some very questionable calls in that game that could have went either way and they went Alabama's side. There were very questionable calls throughout the season and it seems they go for the better team. Whether that's true or not, we can never prove that but that's what it seems like."

Watch the last 1:02 of the Tennessee-Alabama game below. CBS analyst Gary Danielson remarks that Cody could have been penalized. "I don't want to get into these conspiracies anymore," Danielson said. "I'll let somebody else handle that."

We just did.

Mike Riley is a great coach: Riley proved once again that he is one of the most underrated coaches in the country. Why Tennessee (Riley has southern roots) or programs that have the infrastructure to be consistent top 15 teams have not intensely pursued him blows my mind. Riley and the OSU coaching staff had the Trojans number for the second year in a row on Saturday and he made one of the best defenses in the country look very pedestrian. Oregon State never quit and was one possession away from possibly winning the game.

The Rogers brothers aren’t too bad either. . .307 total yards and 2 touchdowns against the best defense in the Pac-10…

USC game MVP’s= Alan Bradford and Jeremy Bates: Is Lendale White back playing for the Trojans? Alan Bradford sure brought back memories of the former great Trojan tailback. The Trojans are starting to develop a mini Thunder-Lightning package which is going to really help keep opponents guessing. Bradford’s bruising style of running is complemented by deceptive top end speed that allows him to break off big runs like the 46 yard touchdown run in the second half. When Bradford is running hard it gives the Trojans offense a power mentality that fires everyone up and is the perfect compliment to a finesse style of offense.

Jeremy Bates called another fantastic game. With the exception of calling a long pass play in the 4th quarter up 13 points which was intercepted, Bates mixed up his play calling brilliantly and took advantage of a porous Oregon State pass defense. Bates continued to utilize the Tight Ends while allowing the running game to get into a rhythm.

(More on Bates and other observations after the jump)

What to watch in the Pac-10

Posted by ESPN.com's Ted Miller

Just four games again this weekend, with No. 6 USC's visit to Notre Dame for its annual showdown with the Fighting Irish leading the slate. The three Pac-10 games, however, may establish season trajectories for teams trying to moving up in the conference pecking order. All three games are interesting because they are matchups of teams entering under similar circumstances, ergo some of the redundancy in our "What to watch."

1. Barkley vs. Clausen on the big stage: Both were the No. 1 quarterbacks of their respective recruiting classes. Both entered school early in order to participate in spring football. Both became starters as true freshmen. And they are friends who, while growing up in southern California, shared a quarterbacks coach. Clausen's career didn't get off to as fast a starter as Barkley's, but that was mostly because his supporting cast didn't approach the talent that presently surrounds Barkley. Clausen is now a leading the Heisman Trophy candidate. If he beats USC, he might become the leading Heisman Trophy candidate. And Barkley would like nothing more to steal the stage from his buddy, which would inspire talk about Heismans in his future.

2. Stanford back on track: Stanford suffered a dispiriting loss at Oregon State, falling behind 31-7 before rallying to make things respectable in the second half. The Cardinal seemed overwhelmed with the Beavers team speed, particularly the Rodgers brothers. Arizona is a fast team, but it doesn't have any offensive playmakers comparable to the Rodgers brothers, particularly with running back Nic Grigsby nursing a shoulder injury. Will the Cardinal, once on the cusp of a national ranking, recover their mojo?

3. Arizona back on track: Arizona suffered a dispiriting loss at Washington, allowing a 12-point lead with just over four minutes left disappear, the game-winning TD scored controversially on a fluke deflection. The Wildcats dominated the game but struggled to convert in the redzone, which left an opening for the stunning finish. The Wildcats may get a number of starters back -- Grigsby, defensive end Brooks Reed, receiver Bug Wright, among others -- which should help the cause. Will the Wildcats, once on the cusp of a national ranking, recover their mojo?

4. Wounded California looks for some offense: California, once No. 6 in the country, has lost two consecutive conference games by a combined count of 72-6. The Bears haven't scored a touchdown in nearly a month. Oregon and USC ganged up along the line of scrimmage to thwart running back Jahvid Best, and UCLA is sure to do the same. That means Cal needs quarterback Kevin Riley to recover his early-season sharpness following a bye week. Otherwise, it's hard to imagine the Bears scoring many points.

5. Wounded UCLA looks for some offense: UCLA, once poised to jump into the top-25, has lost two consecutive conference games by a combined count of 48-26. No, it doesn't sound as emasculating as Cal's numbers, but the Bruins don't have any impressive early-season performances they can point to as proof that the offense is capable of clicking. Quarterback Kevin Price played in his first game since breaking his jaw at Tennessee but was benched for a spell in favor freshman Richard Brehaut. Prince remains the starter, but he needs to be sharper against a Bears defense that has plenty of talent but has underachieved this year.

6. Jake Locker vs. the Sun Devils D: Arizona State ranks third in the nation in total defense and it solved pass rush problems last week at Washington State by piling up 12 sacks. Washington quarterback Jake Locker leads the conference in total offense with 270 yards per game. His offensive line figures to struggle against the Sun Devils front, so Locker's charge will be to get the ball off quickly or to create plays with his feet. The winner of this game is thinking bowl berth. The loser probably falls short.

7. How good is this USC defense? The rebuilt Trojans defense ranks among the national leaders in just about every statistical category. It doesn't seem like replacing eight starters from 2008 has caused much of a drop-off. But Clausen and Notre Dame will offer the best offense the Trojans have faced. The Fighting Irish rank 10th in the nation with 470 yards per game, and Clausen has been particularly good in the clutch. If this one stays close, will the Trojans D or Clausen make the final statement?

8. It's time for Danny Sullivan to step up or step aside: Some Sun Devils fans have been agitating almost since last spring for true freshman Brock Osweiler to replace senior Danny Sullivan. Sullivan has done little thus far to quiet his critics. He ranks eighth in the conference in passing efficiency after throwing three interceptions last week at Washington State. The Huskies defense is a bend-but-don't break unit that has been solid in the red zone. If Sullivan doesn't lead his team to victory -- it shouldn't take too much scoring with ASU's defense -- he might sit down and Osweiler might take over.

Recruiting: Dietrich Riley Puts on a Show; Gives In-Game Shout-Out to Pete Carroll

From PasadenaStarNews.com:

St. Francis High School running back Dietrich Riley took a handoff from quarterback Justin Posthuma. He went 2 yards up the middle into the end zone untouched and when he reached the back of the goal line, he said, "Fight on, baby."

USC head coach Pete Carroll, standing against the goal post, just laughed.

The highly recruited senior, who has not made his collegiate choice, did not have time to say anything to Notre Dame assistant coach Jon Tenuta, who was also on the sidelines.

But he said a lot with his first-half actions.

Riley made some big tackles on defense and rushed for 109 yards and three scores on 13 carries to lead the undefeated Golden Knights to a 42-7 victory over visiting El Rancho on Thursday night.

"It was cool for them to take time out of their schedules to watch me play," Riley said. "It is a lot of pressure. They're here to see what I'm capable of doing, so I have to go out and do what I can do."

Dietrich is fresh off an official visit to Tennessee and the word is the Vols have made significant ground in his recruiting. So with that said, it's nice to see Dietrich joking around with Coach Carroll. Even with all the UT talk and Florida offering recently, many still believe USC will be the team to beat.

What to watch in the Pac-10

Posted by ESPN.com's Ted Miller

Just four games this weekend, but three of them figure to have significant ramifications in the Pac-10 pecking order. Arizona State should be able to take care of business against a beaten up Washington State team, right? USC and California are sitting at home this weekend. Guess here is their bye week experience will feel slightly different.

1. Nate Costa gets his moment: The expectations for Costa were high before the 2008 season. He was the heir-apparent to Dennis Dixon, and many Ducks fans whispered that he might even be better at running Chip Kelly's offense than Dixon was. Then he blew out his knee. Again. Jeremiah Masoli ended up being thrust into the starting role and ran with it. It seemed that, at best, Costa would finish his Oregon career as a backup wondering what might have been. Now, with Masoli nursing a bum knee, all signs point to him starting at UCLA. Can he keep the Ducks on top of the Pac-10?

2. Can Toby Gerhart make a Heisman push against Oregon State? Gerhart's name is officially in the mix. If he turns in a big day against the Beavers -- say 130-plus yards, a touchdown or two -- and the Cardinal improves to 4-0 in the Pac-10, then his candidacy should gain some real momentum as folks look for a candidate to compete with the usual suspects. And the Cardinal's subsequent national ranking should help.

3. Was Washington a one-hit wonder? The Huskies have lost two in a row after beating USC. Sure, they've posted two strong losing efforts this season against LSU and Notre Dame --and let's not forget they went 0-12 in 2008 -- but there was a moment when it seemed like a dramatic and total turnaround was possible. That's still possible. Beat a good Arizona team and the Huskies would be halfway to bowl eligibility. And they'd be 2-1 in the conference. Another competitive performance won't mean much, though. Close losses to good teams still look the same in the record book.

4. Is this the Cougars' best chance for a Pac-10 win? Arizona State is coming off a dispiriting home loss to Oregon State. Its offensive line is beat up. It's got a bit of a quarterback controversy. It's possible the Sun Devils will take Washington State lightly. If you look through the Cougars' remaining schedule, there aren't too many opportunities for wins. And, to be realistic, their chances are slim Saturday. Still, this might be their best shot. Little has gone well for the Cougars this year. Maybe Lady Luck will smile on them at least once.

5. QB Kevin Prince returns for UCLA: The Bruins managed to beat Kansas State without Prince, who broke his jaw against Tennessee, but Stanford made it clear that a solid defense can't carry it the entire season. Re-enter Prince. He's probably not going to be sharp after missing three weeks of work. And he may feel a bit nervous with a jaw that only was cleared medically Wednesday. But he's the best hope for a downfield passing game that could extend the Oregon defense so it can't gang up on the run.

6. Might Nick Foles steal the stage from Jake Locker? It's only Foles' second start for Arizona, but he was so lights-out at Oregon State it's not unreasonable to wonder if he can duplicate his three touchdown effort in Corvallis. Of course, Husky Stadium is a bit bigger and louder. But the Huskies' defense is also a bit softer than the Beavers. Locker might be the conference's premier quarterback, but Foles is presently its highest rated.

7. Rodgers brothers challenge the improved Stanford defense: Stanford's defense has been strong much of the season, particularly in its last three games, but it was gashed at Wake Forest when the Demon Deacons seemed to use superior speed to take over in the second half. The Rodgers brothers, James and Jacquizz, are far more dangerous than anything Wake had to offer. They rank one-two in all-purpose yards in the conference. So there's no mystery here. Contain the Rodgers brothers and you contain the Beavers.

8. Danny Sullivan fights for his job: Arizona State fans are clamoring for Dennis Erickson to bench Sullivan in favor of backup Brock Osweiler, a true freshman. Sullivan ranks last in the conference in pass efficiency, but he hasn't had a lot of help on offense, particularly with an injury-ravaged line. Washington's State defense, however, and a half-full road stadium could be the perfect antidote for Sullivan's woes. Perhaps he and the offense figure some things out and that carries them for the rest of the season.

Headlinin': Stafon Johnson, on the comeback

• Out of the woods. Doctors said the neck and throat injury USC running back Stafon Johnson sustained while lifting weights Monday would have killed a normal person without Johnson's marbled neck, but he was alert Tuesday after a marathon seven-hour surgery, communicating nonverbally with visitors and attempting not to laugh at Pete Carroll. And, assuming his recovery goes as expected, they think Johnson will be able to resume his career in the long run:

"We definitely are working very hard to get him better, for him and for the rest of his fans," said Dr. Gudata Hinika, trauma director at California Hospital Medical Center. "So we expect him to be on the football field at some time."

The question is whether that's at USC or in the NFL -- university compliance officials said Johnson could successfully apply for a medical hardship that would grant him a fifth year with the Trojans in 2010, but an NFL scout told the L.A. Times the league has enough film and would only need to get a clean bill on Johnson's recovery. Observers around the program think he's a goner if he recuperates in time to go through pre-draft workouts.

• What's in the pot, Terp fans? Mmmm, head coach. The slow, almost imperceptible simmer under Ralph Friedgen's seat at Maryland the last two years is in full blaze after a 1-3 start that includes a futile blowout at California, a near-miss in overtime over I-AA James Madison, a second consecutive loss to Middle Tennessee State, a turnover-filled debacle at home against equally reeling Rutgers, and now an open inquiry into Friedgen's contract situation by the Washington Post:

But what is Maryland -- and more specifically [athletic director Debbie] Yow -- to do? Friedgen is owed about $4.5 million for the two remaining years on his contract. Regardless of how this season unfolds, buying Friedgen out of his remaining two years is considered unlikely, particularly given economic conditions.

When asked Tuesday if Friedgen would return as coach next season, Yow said: "I will evaluate the status of the program after we play the entire season, not now, with eight games remaining. My focus is on supporting the team and our coaching staff. That focus will continue [until] season's end."

"... at which point we break out the guillotine." Actually, Maryland is an unusual "hot seat" situation because of the clear succession plan from Friedgen to offensive coordinator James Franklin, who could move up somewhat seamlessly with a passing of the torch in place of a messy denouement. But never underestimate Friedgen's ability to pull his feet from the fire: The vultures were out last September, too, and the Terps recovered to win eight and were a touchdown against Boston College away from the championship game in the wide-open ACC. Who else you got in the Atlantic Division?

• Oklahoma! Where the coach plays coy with quarterback plans. Sam Bradford "looked good" again in his second day back at Oklahoma practice Tuesday, according to coach Bob Stoops, who still wouldn't give any indication about the Sooners' plans at quarterback Saturday night at Miami.
The Chowista's came out in droves this week

It's that time of the month again for some in the press...

The time for them to pine for the past when USC doesn't live up to expectations. We hear it constantly from the insufferable Scott Wolf. We recently heard it from the insufferable Matt Hayes. And now Chris Dufresne has joined the chorus (circus?). It really is a spectacle to watch, a supposed impartial press he can seem to get over the fact that the two big egos in the room were never going to last.

This week Dufresne opens up the mailbag...it just so happens that all of the answered mail seemed to always want to discuss Norm Chow or Pete Carroll's deficiency with running the offense. Of course Dufresne led with the Chowista's to set the tone for effect.

My first response was Really? No Kidding?

There was no second response because I wasn't really shocked at all.

Here is a sample...

Question: Do you think Norm Chow was chuckling to himself at some point on Sunday? You know, we never see people wide open with regularity at USC since Norm departed. The art of the mismatch has left the building.

Patrick K. Gallagher

Long Beach

Answer: Norm isn't that kind of guy, but if it was me, I'd be Chuckles the Clown.

What's playing out in Los Angeles right now is fascinating. USC has not won a national title since Chow left the staff after the 2004 season, and we know why he left.

Pete Carroll had two young whiz kids on his staff, Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin, who were getting antsy for larger roles as outside job offers were coming in.

So Carroll took Chow to lunch in the South Bay and said he wanted to promote him to assistant head coach.

Hey, that's terrific! Except, he was going to take away play-calling duties -- the thing Chow does best -- and make the kids co-coordinators.

Next thing you knew Norm was in Nashville.

For what it's worth, now back in town, Chow called a nice game Saturday as he nursed backup quarterback Kevin Craft to UCLA's victory against Kansas State.

Also, in the critical moments of this year's Tennessee game, Chow called a quarterback sneak for Kevin Prince on third down with UCLA holding a six-point lead pinned against its own end zone.

Rick Neuheisel overruled Chow and ordered the bootleg play that ended up getting Prince's jaw broken in two places.

Hindsight is always perfect, but Rick should have listened to Norm.

Q: USC's problems Saturday were symptoms of very poor hiring decisions by Pete Carroll that began after Chow was pushed out. . . . As it is, the most successful period of the Carroll legacy is the "Chow Era." Ironic, isn't it?

Steve Rodriguez

A: I don't know if it's ironic or interesting. I always get that mixed up.

These sorts of questions, of course, is what some of the USC fan base thinks...those who can let go of the past. Those who constantly dream of what if's. Those who think Norm Chow would have cured all the ills of USC's bad performances the last few years.

I don't claim to be a football expert but digging up the numbers on some of USC's past bed wettings point to some things that Chow could have had very little to do with...lets come back to that later.

Lets pick the one game that gives the fan base the most angst...the one game that would have cemented Pete Carroll's legacy forever...Texas. If USC wins that game Chow was as good as gone, Chow would have leveraged that into a head coaching job.. Sure the voices in the wilderness would have said that there was nothing more that Chow had to prove that the time was right for him to go to stake his own claim. IF everything else stayed the same there would still be in the some out in the wilderness claiming that PC had not won anything without Norm Chow.

We are where we are...

There are some that continue to whine and cry about Chow's departure claiming it all because of Sarkisian and Kiffin. Whatever...Chow has some mud on his shoes here too...like trying to woo Mark Sanchez away from USC when he thought he had the 'furd job locked up. Say what you want about Sark or Kiff running Chow out there isn't one specific reason that led to Chow leaving...it was a little bit of everything. People seem to forget (or miss) that BOTH Pete Carroll and Norm Chow have big egos so there is no guarantee that Chow would have lasted much longer than 2005.

This whole situation is symbiotic...Pete Carroll went out and got the talent and PC, Ed O and Chow (with others) worked together to get it firing on all cylinders. Chow has never done it on his own. He always needed someone to go out and get his players. He is not a recruiter. Nothing wrong with that but lets not make the man something more than he really is...

So lets look at those game I mentioned.

The MNC against Texas - USC scores 38 points and gains over 500 yards. If not for a patchwork defense that was put together with spit and toilet paper because of youth and injuries I am not seeing how much more Chow would have or could have done. Yes, there will be those that say that not having Bush in the game on 4th and 2 was a critical miscue but SC ran that play all night with success. Texas knew it was coming, SC knew Texas knew and the Texas defense held, case closed. We could dissect that until the end of time...

Against Oregon St. 2006 - USC scores 31 points and gains almost 500 yards...it was the 4 turnovers and a punt return for a TD that sunk USC that day...Not sure how Chow being in the booth changes that.

Against ucla 2006 - Last time I checked Norm Chow didn't coach the O line and that game saw Booty on his back a lot in that game. If the QB doesn't have any protection you might as well throw the play book in the trash.

Against Stanford 2007 - USC scores 23 points but gains over 450 yards. You could make the argument that SC could have made better use of its time in the redzone but 5 turnovers and the USC defense allowing a conversion on 4th and 20 is what killed them that fateful night.

Against Oregon St. 2008 - That was a complete defensive debacle in the first half. SC never recovered...I am not sure that Chow knows anything about defense in regards to coaching it.

As good as Chow is, I am not sure he would have addressed some or any of those issues listed above...I simply refuse to think that Norm Chow would have cured all of SC's ills in those games. I can understand and accept some of the criticism that has been heaped on Pete Carroll for letting his ego get in the way of how this team is perceived to be run. I can see where some will criticize some of his coaching moves as OJT for some who have come and gone from the staff but that is a different issue. The issue I am addressing is Norm Chow.

Everyone wants to point to the fact that Pete Carroll has won nothing since Norm Chow left...

I will take the flip side to that coin, what has Norm Chow won or accomplished since he left Pete Carroll and USC?

Not Much...

Until I actually see a crystal ball in the Morgan Center I am not convinced that ucla will ever be a national contender...I mean one MNC (split) in 50 years does not make you a national power house. I don't care who the HC or the OC is. There are already rumblings that Chow and Slick Rick are having some clashes...not surprising. When Chow took the job across town my 3-year old could have pointed out that sooner or later there would be tensions between the two. Slick Rick's ego is as big as Pete Carroll's...we already know Chow has a big ego.

Only time will tell...but I have moved on.

Last week Mark Sanchez won the Pepsi NFL rookie of the week award. Sanchez is again nominated for this honor along with former USC linebacker Brian Cushing.

Sanchez led the Jets to a 16-9 win over their hated rival the New England Patriots. Sanchez finished the day 14 for 22 with 163 yards and one TD. Cushing helped the Houston Texans defeat the Tennessee Titans 34-31 by recording 10 tackles (two went for losses) and deflecting a pass.
Pac-10 Toughness

Since everyone knows that the media never engages in stereotypes of the conferences and actually tells it like it is, I thought I’d provide a round up of all the stories extolling the Pac-10 for its toughness as two of its teams out-slugged and out-physicaled teams from the Big Ten and SEC.

You see, when the Pac-10 loses one of these type of games, it is always pigeon-holed as being ’soft’. Conversely, when the SEC wins, it is because it is tough and, of course, fast. The Big Ten is (naturally) slow, but it also gets to be labeled ‘physical’ when it wins an interconference game. Also, when the Pac-10 loses an interconference game, it is because the conference has issues. When the SEC loses one of these games, well, there’s really nothing to say.

Here are all the links to those stories about how UCLA beat Tennessee because it was tougher and faster and how USC beat Ohio State because it was more physical and how the both wins were a sign of the Pac-10’s strength as a conference:

Hope you enjoyed them.

The HP Heisman Watch

We are two weeks in and the Heisman race is starting to whittle down somewhat. Remember, this list is of those who have a shot to actually win the trophy, so others who will get Heisman votes in the end may not be here:

1. Colt McCoy, Texas–McCoy threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns against Wyoming and added an interception, plus 44 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. On the year, he is 51 of 76 (67 percent) for 654 yards, 5 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, with 41 rushing yards and 1 rushing touchdown. He won’t face legitimate competition until mid-October and so his position on top of this list is unlikely to budge until then. For now, he remains the player most likely to win the Heisman.

2. Tim Tebow, Florida–He had a Tebow-esque game against Troy, throwing for 237 yards on 15 of 24 passing, with 4 touchdown passes and no interceptions. He also ran for 71 yards and a score. On the year, he is 25 of 39 (64 percent) for 425 yards, 5 touchdowns and no interceptions, to go with 72 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground. He’ll get a chance to show off this weekend against Tennessee in a game no one would care about if it weren’t for Lane Kiffin’s big mouth. As with McCoy, his real tests come starting in October and so his position here is unlikely to change until then.

3. Jahvid Best, Cal–Best ran for 144 yards on 17 carries against Eastern Washington. He had a touchdown rushing and a touchdown receiving. On the year, he has 281 yards on 27 carries (10.4 average), 3 rushing touchdowns and 4 catches for 42 yards and 1 receiving score. While McCoy and Tebow won’t be focused upon until mid-October, Best has a chance to stick out a bit in the next three weeks, as he has games at Minnesota, at Oregon and then the big one versus USC. If he turns up the production a bit in these next three games, he’ll be in pretty good shape, especially if Cal remains undefeated.

4. Daryll Clark, Penn State–Had another nice game this past week, throwing for 240 yards and 3 touchdowns (with one pick) on 20 of 31 passing against Syracuse. For the season, he is 49 of 71 for 593 yards with 6 passing touchdowns and 2 interceptions. His schedule isn’t especially conducive to a Heisman run, but if he keeps playing well and Penn State remains undefeated, he’ll be a viable option if any of the others in front of him screw up.

5. Max Hall, BYU–Hall went 24 of 32 for 309 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception against Tulane. On the year, he is 50 of 70 for 638 yards, with 4 touchdowns and 3 picks. Hall gets Florida State this week and it’s a shame for him that the Seminoles looked so bad against Jackson State, as he won’t get as much credit if the Cougars win this one. If BYU gets through the season undefeated and Hall’s numbers look good, he’ll have a shot at the Heisman if the others ahead of him falter.

6. Joe McKnight, USC–McKnight didn’t do well enough against Ohio State to catapult himself into the upper echelon of Heisman contenders, but he did do enough to stick around for a possible late-season run. He rushed for 60 yards on 16 carries and caught 2 passes for 45 yards, but many of those yards were clutch in the final minutes of USC’s dramatic win, so he did well when everyone was watching. On the year, he has 205 rushing yards on 30 carries (6.8 ypc), and 3 catches for 66 yards. He needs to get to 1,500 yards on the season to make a legitimate case for the Heisman.

7. Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State–Bryant played well in OSU’s lost to Houston, catching 5 passes for 75 yards and returning a punt 82 yards for a touchdown. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make the plays needed to save the Cowboys and so he takes a hit in the Heisman race. However, this is where being a receiver in the race is beneficial, as he won’t take as much blame for the loss as he would if he were a quarterback. On the year, he has 8 catches for 162 yards and 2 touchdowns and has 3 punt returns for 111 yards and 1 score. If he can be the catalyst for a Cowboy run at the Big 12 title, he will start to jump back up in this race.

8. Jevan Snead, Ole Miss–Bye. Snead is barely hanging on this list. I doubt whether he will put up the numbers he needs to compete with the other quarterbacks, but as long as Ole Miss is undefeated and he performs well, we’ll keep him here.

Dropped Out: Jimmy Clausen, Terrelle Pryor–Both these guys can still have great seasons and even get some Heisman votes, but anything they do will mostly serve to set them up for a run at the 2010 Heisman.

If the Vote Were Held Today

1. Colt McCoy

2. Tim Tebow

3. Jahvid Best

4. Max Hall

5. Dez Bryant

6. Joe McKnight

7. Case Keenum

8. Eric Berry

9. Tate Forcier

10. Jimmy Clausen
