Monday Morning QB: 09.25.06
Before Pete Carroll took questions criticizing Lane Kiffin, he answered them -- with some cold, hard stats.
Carroll picked 2003 because the Trojans had a first-year quarterback (Matt Leinart) and eventually relied on freshman tailbacks (Reggie Bush, LenDale White).
"You should look at the comparisons," Carroll said. "We're murdering those stats."
Through the first three games, here are the comparisons:
119 rushing yards/game in 2003.
179 rushing yards/game in 2006.
346 total yards/game in 2003.
417 total yards/game in 2006.

That's where statistics do not tell the true story. Unfortunately, there are no stats for 'rhythm'. The offense this year has not looked in rhythm at all. The offense with Matt Leinart et al at the beginning of 2003 seemed to show rhythm almost right after the first game.
But that's USC. We have a high standard and we are not satisfied to simply beat our opponents - the last few years have made us believe that 35 points is the bar and if we don't meet that bar, we have failed!

You guys are also discounting something else -- about 10 fewer plays per game on offense, thanks to the 3-2-5e rule that starts the clocks on ready on changes of possession.
Factor that in, plus any "lack of rhythm", and the Trojans offensive output is downright frightening for opponents.
All the naysayers -- I'm writing your names down, and you are NOT invited to the Bowl Game parties.

Aaaaannnnnndddd....
We won our Pac-10 road opener this year, unlike at Cal in 2003.
Here's hoping to another awesome run at history.
Murder those stats!!! Murder them!!! Kill 'em All!!!
