Maualuga most likely out against Oregon

Barring a last-minute recovery, USC middle linebacker Rey Maualuga won’t play against Oregon on Saturday because of a sprained right knee.

Maualuga missed practice for the third consecutive day.

Brian Cushing took most of the reps at middle linebacker Wednesday, with Michael Morgan sliding into Cushing’s strong-side spot.

Backup middle linebacker Chris Galippo, on the mend from back surgery, will play but probably won’t start.

Kicking It with David Buehler

Guessing that Taylor Mays would finish as the top overall performer in the Trojans’ end-of-spring combine testing doesn’t exactly qualify you for Mensa. It was only a slightly tougher choice than picking the winner of shark vs. bait. But, in scrolling down the list of the top 11 performers published on petecarroll.com, a few surprises stick out. Mays’ score of 97 (out of 100) leads the team, but he’s followed closely by Will Harris (96), Michael Morgan (94) and Nick Howell (94). The player who checks in as the biggest surprise, to everyone except his teammates and himself, sits right in the middle of the list.

From Joe Jares of USC REPORT

GOOD PRECEDENT: 2ND-HALF SUCCESS

I was never good at deciphering and interpreting the past-performance hieroglyphics in the Daily Racing Form, but at least I figured out that it was probably smart to bet on proven stretch runners. In other words, fine finishers.

That can be carried over to football and, specifically, to Pete Carroll's teams at USC.

FEBRUARY 1st: SIGNING DAY

So much for all that talk about Vidal Hazelton de-committing from USC for Penn State. The best receiver in the nation signed his USC letter of intent this morning. And now USC is chasing his teammate from Hargrave Military Academy — Keiland Williams.

An awesome linebacker prospect out of Texas shocked everyone by announcing he was going to USC over Texas A&M and Florida State. Welcome Michael Morgan.

Top prospects that were considering USC, Andre Smith and Gerald McCoy, committed to Alabama and Oklahoma, respectively.

More updates to come....

Recruits to fall in line

The Trojans have landed 11 of the top 100 recruits in the nation. Texas has got 9. Florida has got 8. But there are 27 top 100 recruits still undecided, and USC is on the list of almost all of them, especially the big dogs.

Here's a run-down of potential players to welcome to the Trojan family:

<strike>5-star offensive lineman Andre Smith -
Supposively gave word to hometown favorite Alabama months ago, but he could be a signing day surprise.</strike> COMMITTED TO ALABAMA.

<strike>5-star defensive tackle Gerald McCoy -
This Oklahoma native would be a huge steal from Stoops.</strike> COMMITTED TO OKLAHOMA.

<strike>5-star running back C.J. Spiller -
A country boy from Florida. Can he and his family make the adjustment to big city living? Pete Carroll certainly made an impression on his mom. He could become the 2nd C.J. of the Trojans' 2006 recruiting class.</strike> COMMITTED TO CLEMSON.

5-star running back Stafon Johnson -
Straight out of Dorsey. This kid should be a lock to stay in LA. COMMITTED TO USC.

<strike>
5-star offensive lineman Stephen Schilling -
USC has a better chance at this guy then Andre Smith. Although the Trojans would like both after losing underclassmen Winston Justice and Fred Matua.</strike> COMMITTED TO MICHIGAN.

<strike>
4-star running back Michael Goodson -
This kid has Reggie Bush-like moves as evidenced in the Army All-American game.</strike> COMMITTED TO TEXAS A&M.

<strike>4-star running back LeSean McCoy -
Likely to remain home and attend Penn State, but he's still on the Trojans' radar since the Trojans' backfield will be playing on Sundays next season.</strike>COMMITTED TO MIAMI.

4-star linebacker Michael Morgan -
There's nothing like stealing top talent out of Texas. See Emmanuel Moody. COMMITTED TO USC.

<strike>
4-star defensive back Devin Ross -
Supposively the Trojans were out of the running, but are now back on the block.</strike> COMMITTED TO ARIZONA.

*All rankings based on Rivals.com
