Austin Murphy's "Fearless" Predictions

From the not going to happen department:

I predict the Buckeyes will launch their run at a third-consecutive national-title game by taking down USC at the L.A. Coliseum on September 13 in what will be the lowest-scoring game of the season for both teams. Laurinaitis, fellow LB Marcus Freeman & Co. will stifle the Trojans' rushing attack, inviting first-year starter Mark Sanchez to beat them with the pass. He won't.

An additional 1,607 fans will welcome a different outcome as the Coliseum announced an increased seating capacity for the coming season — from 92,000 to 93,607.

Early Odds: USC -4.5, Ohio St

The game of the season is close to two months away and Vegas is getting itself ready. Early projections have USC on top...but not by much. The 4.5 point spread shows just how unsure bookies are about USC's young offensive line and QB Sanchez' accuracy. As reported by the LA Times:

"Not to put undue pressure on the new quarterback, but the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas has set opening lines on two key USC football games, favoring Mark Sanchez and the Trojans by 4 1/2 points over Ohio State and 17 1/2 over Notre Dame."

Yes Charlie...that says 17 1/2. And that's despite Notre Dame reaching several milestones in the 2007 season. The most losses in a single year with 9; two of the ten worst losses ever (38-0 losses to both Michigan and USC); and the first 6-game losing streak for home games. You think all those records would count for something. What can I say? I guess Rodney just says it best...

Mustain hoping to contribute this fall

<!--start image--><!-- end image-->Back in the spring, Pete Carroll named Mark Sanchez his starting quarterback.
At least Six USC Games On ABC

Mark Sanchez, get ready for your close-up! At least 6 USC games in 2008 will be broadcast on ABC or ESPN.

USC’s September 13th home opener against Ohio State will be the nationally-televised game of the week, as will Oregon at USC on October 4, Cal at USC on November 4 and Notre Dame at USC on November 29, all broadcast at 5 PM. USC’s September 25th game at Oregon State will be the Thursday game of the week on ESPN and their season ender at UCLA will be broadcast nationally on ABC.

USC’s games against Arizona State, at Arizona, at Washington and at Stanford are all possible additions to the ABC schedule for regional broadcasts.

USC’s home opener at Virginia, curiously, is not on the ABC/ESPN schedule, and ABC will not be broadcasting any Pac Ten games the week of October 18th, when the Trojans travel to Washington State. (more…)

Sam Baker Gets it Done

Sam Baker throws his weight around. Image from Trojannyc.com

It has been said the Trojans that decided to stay on for their 2007 Senior seasons have improved their draft stock remarkably. It has been said their growth in maturity and skill will make the likes of Ellis, Rivers and Davis millions extra in contract deals. Then there's the footnote: except for Sam Baker. Out of all the Trojans that have risen in the pre-draft rankings, offensive left tackle Sam Baker seems to be the only one that's fallen. That dip is likely due to a hamstring injury that hampered progress his senior season and some slow 40-times clocked at USC's Pro Day. But despite the drop, Stewart Mandel writes on SI.com, Baker is the most underrated o-lineman in the draft.

Let's see here. Baker was the starting left tackle -- most important position on the line -- for the most dominant program in the country for four straight years...Based purely on Baker's college track record, I assumed he would be one of, if not the top, tackle on the board; instead, I see he's barely in the top 10. Baker reportedly did not test well at USC's pro day, which means, of course, that those four years never happened.

Still, Baker's likely to go late-first to early second round. None the less, a drop of millions has got to get to him, right? So does national championship winner and 3X first team, all-American Sam Baker regret coming back for his senior season?

Mustain has less of ‘edge’ as backup

It’s been a rough week for USC quarterback Mitch Mustain, who met with Trojans coach Pete Carroll after losing the starting job to Mark Sanchez and admitted he was still in a funk during Thursday’s practice. “It takes a little bit of that edge away,” Mustain said. It does (affect you) a little bit.” Maybe that is one reason he was critical of his performance Thursday.

Thursday Hot Links

USC Football

In case you missed it, Mark Sanchez was named starting quarterback. I relegated this to Hot Links because it wasn't exactly news to anybody except Mitch Mustain. That's no
knock against Mitch -- he needs to keep that mentality all the way into
the fall to keep competing and trying to pass Sanchez for the starting
job. Ultimately, the first game is a long way away.

Now that the quarterback race has cooled off, time to focus on the really interesting logjam: tailbacks.

Sunday Morning QB's "Absurdly Premature Assessment" series has tackled USC's first opponent: Virginia.

The U.S. Army All-America Bowl is up to four USC commits.

USC Basketball

More hype is building about DeMar DeRozan's "freakish athletic ability."

Other USC News

Bobak emailed us some interesting admission stats from this year:

UCLA (4/14/08): "the university was able to admit 22.7 percent of all
those who applied, compared with 23.6 percent last year."

USC (03/28/08): "21.0 percent were accepted this year, compared to 24.8
percent in 2007."

So it's official ... USC now has a lower admission rate than UCLA. But 15 years ago, USC admitted a whopping 70% of applicants.

Assorted Gossip

Turn out the lights . . .

For two weeks I resisted the constant temptation to say the quarterback competition was a charade although anyone who reads this blog probably figured out what direction the ``derby'' was taking. But it seems foolish to act like anything is up for grabs right now as Mark Sanchez clearly is the No. 1 quarterback.
Here's some facts for those following this race:
Sanchez got six series with the first team during Sunday's scrimmage. Mitch Mustain got two.
Sanchez practiced exclusively with the first team Tuesday. Mustain split time with Aaron Corp with the second team.
Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian said he did not anticipate giving Mustain more time with the first team during USC's next scrimmage on Saturday.
We will wait for the official word from Pete Carroll, of course. When (not who) he announces the starter is the only mystery left right now.

A relatively mistake-free practice Tuesday, at least from an interception standpoint.
``When you start to mature as a quarterback, you realize you don't have to go out of your way to make a big play,'' Mark Sanchez said. ``You really make a concerted effort to be efficient.''

Playing it safe is the norm at ‘SC

From just looking at the statistics of Sunday’s football scrimmage, it seems like Mitch Mustain had a much better day at quarterback than Mark Sanchez. But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that Mustain’s success came against the second-team defense, while Sanchez had a solid day against the first-team defense.
