Smooth sailing in mock game

A number of USC's marquee players played little in Thursday's mock game at the Coliseum. Most importantly for the Trojans, nobody was hurt and everything seemed to go smoothly. Despite some setbacks earlier this month, Coach Pete Carroll said, "I don't think we've ever been this healthy at this time of year."

The headline injury in training camp was a dislocated kneecap suffered two weeks ago by starting quarterback Mark Sanchez. After seeing him throw in 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 drills, Carroll was pleased with Sanchez's progress and said that he could be practicing at full speed in the next couple of days. That would allow Sanchez, who watched the mock game from the sideline, to participate in game-week preparations.

Asked about his other quarterbacks, Mitch Mustain and Aaron Corp, Carroll wasn't saying much without watching the film. "There were no major breakdowns in communication ... we made it through, I think this was just another day for those guys growing."

Sophomore tailback Joe McKnight appeared fine despite dealing with a series of random and presumably painful injuries over the last couple of weeks.

There was some concern over how sharp USC looked on the lines, with a few penalties and turnovers sprinkled in. More coverage after the jump.

Scrimmage Time

Garret Green starts off and throws a 32-yard pass to Jordan Cameron who fumbles it but recovers. So much for Aaron Corp or Mitch Mustain getting the first series. After Green is sacked by Kyle Moore, he scrambles for 16 yards on third down (against the No. 1 defense).

Corp's in and throws a low pass to Vidal Hazelton at the line of scrimmage that falls incomplete. Stafon Johnson picks up four yards on the next play. Corp under heavy rush, finds Hazelton for two yards.
TOUCHDOWN: Green's back and Everson Griffen tips his pass and intercepts it in the end zone. 7-0, white team. Green again and the reserves fail to do much until Kevin Thomas is called for pass interference on Cameron.
Green scrambles for his life but then sets up and finds Cameron wide open behind the defense for 48 yards. Remember this is the vaunted No. 1 defense. Does Virginia have a mobile QB?
TOUCHDOWN: Green then finds Brice Butler for a 12-yard TD pass. Green is 3 for 6 for 83 yards with an interception. Cardinal 7, White 7.
And that's the end of the first quarter. Mitch Mustain must be thinking it would be more fun to be the No. 4 QB, you get more reps.

CFN's Unit Rankings

College Football News ranks the different units from around the country. USC makes a splash on defense but not surprisingly they struggle to get a lot of recognition on offense. I am not going to comment on this too much as this is pretty accurate from an SC standpoint. This is more for just general knowledge.

Safeties Kevin Ellison and Taylor Mays are among six players with starting experience. Even without current pros Sedrick Ellis and Lawrence Jackson, the defensive line will be just fine. On the outside, speedy Everson Griffen is good enough to make folks forget about Jackson. On the inside, senior Fili Moala is about to shed his anonymity while making a strong push for All-American honors and a spot in the first round of next year’s NFL Draft.

The battle between Mark Sanchez and Mitch Mustain to replace John David Booty at quarterback isn’t exactly over. Sanchez got the nod in April, but he got hurt and is questionable for the start of the season. Mustain has done nothing but impress the staff since transferring from Arkansas. Whoever gets the ball will have gobs of speed and explosiveness surrounding him. After getting a taste of action as a freshman, RB Joe McKnight is on the tarmac and preparing for national lift-off. The receivers are a year older, with the size, athleticism, and addition of former Hog Damian Williams to dominate opposing secondaries. The line loses four starters, putting the onus on sophomores Kristofer O’Dowd, Butch Lewis, and Zack Heberer to perform like vets.

There’s more than enough returning talent and former prep All-Americans to run that streak to three, although a few more interceptions would be nice. In Kevin Ellison and Taylor Mays, USC is home to a couple of hard-hitting enforcers with All-America potential. If Josh Pinkard is even close to where he was a couple of years ago, no program in the country will be able to match them at the position. Sure to get picked on early, Shareece Wright needs to give opposing quarterbacks a reason to not look to his side.

The Trojans are so quick and strong up front, opposing backs are rarely able to get to the second level. Of course, not that things get any easier there. Led by Maualuga and Cushing, this group has a nose for the football and a gift for fighting through blockers to get to the ball carrier.
Countdown to 2008 Kickoff: 84 Days

As we continue our quasi-daily countdown towards the 2008 season, we are only 84 days away from seeing the Trojans march into Charlottesville, VA and taking on the Cavaliers. We threw the term "beast" around pretty loosely during last year's countdown and this year will be no exception. The first true beast on the team as we countdown this year is none other than senior defensive end, Kyle Moore.

Coming off a solid junior season where he started 11 games and had 2 interceptions, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery along with 35 tackles. Moore's presence on the field disrupted several of the offenses we faced last season and his uncanny athletic ability allowed him to wreak havoc along the trenches. Moore is expected to start at defensive end this coming season after recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery before the start of spring practice. Here's hoping to a speedy recovery to Kyle so he can be a part of a flat out nasty duo of defensive ends for USC. Coupled with Everson Griffin, USC will suit up two of the most athletic defensive ends in the country.

Fight On!

USC Grabs Seven of Rivals' Top 100

The recruiting gurus at Rivals.com have listed their Top-100, 2008 high school prospects. The Trojans have seven commits (so far) from the cream of the high school crop, only behind Ohio State with eight. Of those seven are two California-bred, five-star offensive tackles in #11 Matt Kalil (Ryan's kid brother) and the ridiculously talented #15 Tyron Smith.

Illinois a no-go for USC’s Moore

USC defensive end Kyle Moore considered playing for Ron Zook when he coached at Florida, but Moore rebuffed all overtures once Zook was fired and then hired by Illinois. “They called me and told me to come to Illinois. I hadn’t heard anything about them,” Moore said. “Illinois was unknown at the time.” Moore said Florida was one of his final choices because he went to high school in Georgia, but Zook’s phone calls from Illinois failed to persuade him to play for the Illini. Or even take a recruiting trip… continue

Trojans feel confident

Scott Wolf, Los Angeles Daily News

Even if voters in the Associated Press Top 25 poll choose to split the national championship this year, it’s unlikely USC can become a contender, especially without playing one of the top 10 teams in the Rose Bowl. But defensive end Kyle Moore said he’s convinced the Trojans are the hottest team in the nation right now… continue

Moore to start against Bruins

Scott Wolf, Los Angeles Daily News

USC defensive end Kyle Moore will return to the starting lineup against UCLA after participating in just 12 plays against Arizona State because of a bruised nerve in his arm. Moore practiced exclusively with the first-string defense this week and regained more motion in his hand as the nerve slowly recovered. He is still wearing a hand brace, but said he can move his hand well enough to play without any problems… continue

Post-Practice Update

Chilo Rachal did not practice because he was sick while Drew Radovich is also battling a stomach virus. Kyle Moore intercepted a tipped John David Booty pass, which drew comparisons to a famously tipped pass about a year ago.
While yesterday's practice bothered Pete Carroll for a lack of enthusiasm, today's was considered much better.

USC DE Moore’s hand will be OK

Scott Wolf, Los Angeles Daily News

USC defensive end Kyle Moore said there was no long-term damage to the bruised nerve in his arm that prevents him from opening and closing his hand. “The nerve is firing and is OK,” Moore said after consulting with a neurologist. But Moore said there is no timetable for when he will regain complete use of his hand. He is wearing a specially designed hand brace that allows some movement, but he will not start against Arizona State today… continue
