Kristofer O'Dowd

By Ben Malcolmson, USC Trojans
USC could make a strong claim to be "America's Team."The Trojans have become the antithesis of a provincial program, as the roster and, most notably, the starting lineup are loaded with players from around the country.Nine of the Trojans' 22 starting roles are filled by players from out of state, continuing a recent trend of USC putting non-Californians in... more »

Posted by ESPN.com's Ted Miller USC defensive tackle Jurrell Casey and cornerback Kevin Thomas, both starters, returned to practice Wednesday after missing the previous two days due to illness. It also appears likely that All-American center Kristofer O'Dowd will return to the starting lineup after missing the opener with a dislocated kneecap. The need for O'Dowd's presence might be... more »

Games are won and lost in the trenches. On Saturday the USC offensive line dominated. The Trojans’ line only allowed one sack and paved the way for an attack that racked up 342 rushing yards.

San Jose St. coach Dick Tomey praised the Trojans' line saying:

“The best I've competed against as a coach,” and that the Trojans, "might have four first-round draft choices in that group."

Look for the offensive line to get even deeper this week vs. Ohio State with the possible return of center Kristofer O'Dowd.

Kristofer O'Dowd was injured last night in USC's opening series during their scrimmage last night at the Coliseum. Starting center Kristofer O'Dowd, regarded as a linchpin for an experienced line expected to ease the transition of a new quarterback, suffered a dislocated right kneecap during the first series of a scrimmage Monday night at the Coliseum. The jury is out. Pete Carroll announced today his depth chart going into the huddle. Of course in traditional Carroll fashion, the competition for starting positions will continue throughout Summer workouts. But the Spring depth charts typically hold strong resemblance to the final list, come start of the football season.

Ted Miller at espn.com has spent the past month ranking the top 30 players in the Pac-10. Not surprisingly, numero uno is USC safety Taylor Mays.

Miller says of Mays:

No one who regularly reads the Pac-10 Blog could possibly question ranking No. 1 the conference's only returning consensus first-team All-American, the most important member of the Trojans' All-Universe 2008 defense and the almost certain first Pac-10 player taken in the 2010 NFL draft. Oh, and the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Mays also is the best all-around athlete in college football. And possibly all of football

USC had the nation's best pass defense in 2008 because of Mays. The Trojans gave up only six touchdown passes all season. Foes completed only 52 percent of their passes and averaged 134 yards per game.

Mays' presence was a giant sign posted in the secondary: "Don't even think about it." And few teams did. And when they did, well, you've seen the clips of Mays' bone-jarring hits.

Other Trojans making the list:

5. Kristofer O'Dowd, C, USC
7. Damian Williams, WR, USC
12. Joe McKnight, RB, USC
17. Charles Brown, OT, USC
19. Josh Pinkard, DB, USC
21. Stafon Johnson, RB, USC
30. Everson Griffen, DE, USC

As usual, here are my thoughts: Positive - Winning the Game Honestly, the only positive I can take away from last night's game was actually winning the game.  It happens every season, we go into a game expecting to blow out the opponent and suddenly all hell breaks loose and your expectations drop to a point where you're just... more »
