Quick Keyshawn note

I talked to Keyshawn Johnson for a few minutes last night and it doesn't sound like anything is imminent regarding his possible comeback attempt.

"I'll just keep working out and see what happens," he said.

Johnson indicated last month that he would be open to returning to football after spending last season as a studio analyst for ESPN. The Dolphins would be his preferred team because of his relationship with Bill Parcells, but at this point, the club appears to be headed in a different direction.

We'll be back soon with some Morning Hash.

Why are Broncos eyeing Colbert?

Posted by ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas

Very surprising that the first wide receiver the Broncos brought in for a visit was Keary Colbert. A former second-round pick, Colbert was nothing short of a complete bust in Carolina.

Â

After a decent rookie season, he struggled mightily. Colbert was given every chance to hold down a starting job opposite Steve Smith, but kept losing it to the likes of Keyshawn Johnson and Drew Carter. At one point, the team and fans bought into the theory that Colbert was playing with some leg problems and would be tremendously improved after surgery. It didn't make a difference.

Â

Colbert works hard, but he drops a lot of balls. He doesn't have great size and has only very ordinary speed. What less could you want in a receiver?

Â

The Broncos need a starter and Colbert's not the answer. Denver has a tendency to adhere to old scouting reports. The Broncos thought very highly of Colbert coming out of USC. So did the Panthers. Look what they got out of him.

Parcells to Keyshawn: Un-retire.

Former USC and NFL receiver Keyshawn Johnson saw his pro-career end abruptly, and as many would agree, prematurely. It's clear now Dwayne Jarrett wasn't yet ready to jump in and replace Keyshawn's spot on the Carolina Panthers roster. But the three-time Pro Bowl receiver took his dismissal from the Panthers in stride, happily transitioning as many former NFL players do, into a comfortable life as sports broadcaster. In Keyshawn Johnson's case, an ESPN telecaster.

It was at ESPN that Keyshawn was reunited with former coach Bill Parcells. The two time Super Bowl winning coach had previously coached Johnson for three years while playing for the New York Jets and later another two with the Cowboys. But it's always back to football for the Big Tuna. Parcells recently un-retired for a third time, to become Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the dismal Miami Dolphins. And now CBS' Jim Berry is reporting, Parcells wants Keyshawn to do the same.

Trojans in NFL Training Camps

    From Wednesday's ESPN.com article,
Washington Redskins: LB Dallas Sartz (strained hamstring) was sidelined morning Wednesday...

Seattle Seahawks: Backup fullback David Kirtman broke his hand during practice Wednesday morning...Kirtman, a fifth-round draft choice from 2006 out of Southern California, was participating in a running plays drill with backs and linemen when he suddenly walked off the field with a trainer while holding his right arm. By the afternoon, Kirtman was wearing a soft brace over his right hand and wrist. A Seahawks spokesman said Wednesday night that the team has yet to determine a treatment course for Kirtman, so there is no estimate on how long he will be out. Kirtman spent most of last season on the practice squad before being added to the active roster in December...Mack Strong, Seattle's two-time Pro Bowl fullback who turns 36 in September, said Wednesday that coaches have told him he will be yielding some of his playing time to younger players this season.
And from last Saturday's LA Times regarding the Carolina Panthers:
The Carolina Panthers signed second-round pick Dwayne Jarrett to a four-year, $3.825 million contract...Jarrett, a receiver from USC, will receive $1.935 million in guaranteed bonuses and incentives, making the deal one of the largest in guaranteed money for a second-round pick. Jarrett, the 45th pick in the draft, is expected to contend for the starting receiver job vacated when Keyshawn Johnson was released in the off-season.

"He's excited to be a Carolina Panther and looking forward to the opportunity to start opposite Steve Smith," Jarrett's agent, Darin Morgan, said.

Jarrett's signing came hours after fellow second-round pick Ryan Kalil agreed to a four-year deal. Kalil, also from USC, is expected to compete for a starting job on the offensive line.
An injury for Sartz, what else is new? Tough luck for Kirtman though, he was a very soild (and underrated) player at 'SC. Let's hope he can get back out there healthy. Best wishes to DJ and Ryan Kalil, they have a damn good chance to start next year.

Good luck in the NFL guys.

Fight On!

Best Pac-10 performances of the past two decades

As the lists continue to proliferate, we continue to tirelessly report them. The latest is Jon Wilner’s, in which he breaks down the best Pac-10 performances of the past 20 years. Former Trojans make a respectable showing, at #8 and #1:

8. Keyshawn Johnson, USC: It’s not easy to identify Keyshawn’s best performance during his dominating 1995 season. But his 12-catch, 216-yard game against Northwestern in the Rose Bowl was, given the setting, nothing short of brilliant.

1. Reggie Bush, USC: In the greatest individual performance I’ve seen, Bush set a Pac-10 record — and recorded the second-highest total in NCAA history — with 513 all-purpose yards against Fresno State in 2005. He ran for 294 yards, returned kicks for 135, caught passes for 68 and returned a punt 16 yards. He had 10 plays of 20 yards or more, which is sensational for a quarterback, unreal for a running back. If you didnt see it, find it and watch it.

Also showing up is Aaron Rodgers’ ridiculous 23 consecutive passes (one for each position he dropped in the following draft) against USC in 2004.

Double Trouble

The Carolina Panthers drafted a deadly duo from USC. In a Fox Sports article entitled "Ready Rookies" writer Randy Hill makes a case that if started, receiver Jarret and Center Kalil will immediately improve the Panther's offense.

The Panthers strike twice with potential steals out of USC in the second round.

Although stopwatch speed was his draft-day downfall, Jarrett is quicker than the guy he's replacing (Keyshawn Johnson). His hands and size should help the Panthers rise from 19th overall in red-zone efficiency.

Kalil should step in as the starter for an offensive line that helped create a measly seven rushing touchdowns last season.

A new teammate with an old name: Jarret will try for another one-two punch with Veteran receiver Steve Smith (10th receiving in the NFL overall last season). Ryan Kalil should boost the Panther's ground game, as they last ranked 24th in the franchise at rushing yards per game.

Trojan DePo: Help Wanted - Keyshawn Johnson

It was out with the old and in with the new for the Carolina Panthers. After Carolina's recent draft acquistion of USC wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett, ex-USC receiver Keyshawn Johnson got the boot. Top overall draft pick in 1996, the soon to be 35 year old Johnson still outplays many of his younger counterparts, wracking up a sizable 815 yards in his single season with the Panthers. Now he's a free agent. And with a number of teams in need of solid a wide out, the very factor that aided Keyshawn's release may become his most valuable asset: his age.

Johnson to be Inducted into Cotton Bowl HOF

USCTrojans.com

Keyshawn Johnson, USC’s 1995 All-American first team wide reeiver, will be inducted into the 2007 class of the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame on April 17 at Cotton Bowl Plaza, Fair Park, in Dallas. Johnson was named the Cotton Bowl Offensive MVP as a 1994 junior when he caught 8 passes for game-records of 222 yards and 3 touchdowns in leading the Trojans to a 55-14 victory over Texas Tech on Jan. 2, 1995. That was USC’s only appearance in the Cotton Bowl… continue

Keyshawn's Words for Theismann

Knowing that Joe Theismann was in the building on Monday night, Keyshawn Johnson couldn't pass up an opportunity to have words with the Golden Domer/football's answer to Tim McCarver on calling him an 'idiot' three years earlier:

"The guy called me an idiot a couple of years ago when I was de-activated in Tampa," Johnson said. "I just told him that's not acceptable. I'm a guy with a degree from the University of Southern California. Idiots don't get degrees. Especially when you don't know what transpired within the organization, I'd just assume you would keep your mouth shut, because the next time that I'm an idiot on national television, I'm not going to be so nice. That was pretty much the conversation."

We're sure the majority of the MNF audience is in agreement with us on this -- please Joe, do it. On national TV. So we can all watch you get your ass kicked (again).
