The Fantasy Sports Trade Association took these stats a couple years back, estimating fantasy sports to be a $3 billion to $4 billion annual impact across the sports industry. No wonder the NFL, NBA, MLB and PGA all want a piece of the pie. And powerhouses like Time-Warner, ESPN, Fox Sports, CBS, NBC and Yahoo are jumping to get their cut of the action. More surprisingly was that of the 12.6 million US adults to play fantasy sports in 2005, one million were female. Since that article's release in 2005, and with the recent internet boom in fantasy sites, those numbers are sure to have increased.
Women and Fantasy Sports? I know what your thinking... The concept has come a long way from obsessive guys drinking bud light and holding mock drafts on fold out card-tables in the garage. Okay...maybe it hasn't come that far. But if you've never really got into fantasy sports yourself, this site might just help change your perspective. Fantasy Sports Girl (FSG) puts a new spin on the past-time, putting the fantasy back into...well...fantasy.

Narbonne High School 4-star safety Byron Moore was given an offer he couldn't refuse. After an impressive show at USC's Rising Stars Camp, Moore -a UCLA verbal commit, was extended an offer by the Trojan coaching staff. A self-professed Trojan fan since he was seven years old, Moore decided to about-face and commit to USC. The 6'1, 200 lbs Moore was quoted in an SCplaybook article as saying:
"It was really hard, because I really like the UCLA coaches, they are a rising program. I thank them a lot for the opportunity they gave me. In the end, my heart was just at ‘SC'. Without a doubt."
With the addition of Moore, USC is cleaning up in the safety department of the '09 recruiting class, leaving the rest of the division-IA schools with slim pickings.

Mayo and The Dude, images from cantstopthebleeding.com and wordpress
OJ Mayo was traded last night following the draft from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Memphis Grizzlies in a landmark deal that saw eight players switch hands, including former crosstown rival Kevin Love. The only problem: the deal was leaked before anyone could let Mayo know.
Rumor has it that Mayo was having a celebration dinner with his family when some dude approached him and said he better turn on the TV. At first Mayo thought it was just a joke. It was only when he assured Mayo he was serious, that Mayo went to the bar and saw the contents of his trade breaking on ESPN.

I don't know if Professor Mayo is signing an autograph or grading that child's book report. Image from Leave The Man Alone
Ovinton J'Anthony Mayo found a GQ suit and a pair of specs to match the class of his proper name, as he took center stage at the NBA draft. The #3 overall pick was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves only to be traded to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of an eight man deal just hours later. Still, Mayo's draft-fashion seems to be making just as big a splash as the momentous trade. LeaveTheManAlone.com writes:
What are those like $500 frames? With no prescription? You can see, OJ! Son, we haven't done that since high school when the folks were rocking Cazals. Still, the spectacles and the three piece suit gets him lumped in with the teenage pepaws. But the suit is fantastic. Well fitted and coordinated. I love the touch of sateen in the fabric. The camera loves the shine. Plus he has confidence. And OJ's draft portrait solidified him as the best dressed.
Now, I'm not sure what "pepaws" are...or "sateen" for that matter...but at least Mayo pulled a Professor Indiana Jones compared to last year Joakim Noah's Sideshow Bob:

A picture is worth a thousand words...
As orignally reported by Ben Bolch of the LA Timesand posted by Adam Rose on All Things Trojan:
Makhtar N'diaye, one of Jefferson's agents with Wasserman Media Group, said after the draft ended that he had spoken with six NBA teams that had expressed interest in his client. N'diaye said Jefferson would play in the NBA summer league and "weigh his options," which could include attempting to obtain free-agent tryouts or playing overseas.
Another year quite literally would have been worth a million bucks.

Hold the Mayo and pass the Love. Only hours after the draft concluded, sources close to the Minnesota Timberwolves broke the story that OJ Mayo has already been traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in return for UCLA's Kevin Love. The AP is reporting that 8-players will be involved in this blockbuster draft night shuffle:
[In addition to Kevin Love] The Timberwolves also received shooter Mike Miller and frontcourt retreads Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins from Memphis in exchange for the draft rights to Mayo, forward Antoine Walker and guards Marko Jaric and Greg Buckner.
More to come as developments progress.

USC phenom OJ Mayo became the highest Trojan to be drafted in the NBA at #3 overall, by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Minnesota finished the '07-'08 season with a dismal 22-60 record, after trading their star Kevin Garnett to the Boston Celtics. Mayo's ball handling, perimeter shooting and leadership ability should make an immediate impact on a roster that's struggling without a clear player to rally behind.

Despite the the NBA draft only hours away and the improper benefits scandal looming over his head, OJ Mayo has been breathing easy. Maybe that's because, barring any cataclysmic happenings, by the end of the night he'll have locked in his dream career (not to mention the millions of dollars that come with it). Or maybe it's because the 6'5" basketball prodigy is just a laid back guy off the court. With his constant drive for success, his superstar ability to create plays and his freshman average of 20.7 points, 3.3 assists, 1.5 steals and 4.5 rebounds per game, Mayo will be an immediate impact player.
But even more impressive than his numbers is his attitude towards his school. In a USA Today interview, Mayo reflected on his maturation at USC. And in regards to all the negative controversy surrounding the school's athletic department:
"Definitely one of the best things that happened to me was going to USC, so lay off the Trojans."

USC Women's Soccer (top) and USC Women's Golf (bottom) with President Bush. White House photos by Eric Draper
And now an official message from the President of the United States of America: USC women's soccer and golf kicks supreme ass. Okay, President Bush didn't actually say it...but it's clear from the expression on his face he was thinking it. USC NCAA champion women's soccer and golf teams were among the 20 national championship teams of '07-08 welcomed June 24th to the White House by President Bush. According to a USC release on its athletic department website:
Bush addressed the assembled teams on the White House's South Lawn, along with a crowd of senators, congressmen, coaches, athletic department staff members and fans. Each team had one player representative -- including USC's Ashley Nick (soccer) and Paola Moreno (golf) sharing the stage with Bush...He also posed for photos with each team inside the White House. The Women of Troy soccer team presented Bush with a soccer ball and jersey, while the golf team gave him a USC golf hat and golf club cover.
Kudos to the Champions!

Yes, it's drafty in here. And no, it's not because you left fly unzipped (although that could be contributing). The first two rounds of the NBA draft will be held tonight, 7pm ET/4pm PT on ESPN, at Madison Square Garden, NY. OJ Mayo's final landing spot has been a constant source of speculation with sources projecting him to go somewhere between the Miami Heat at #2 overall to the Clippers at #7. The general consensus however, not to mention ESPN's own mock draft, has Mayo going 3rd to the Minnesota Timberwolves. If Mayo goes at #3, he will be the highest Trojan to be selected in the NBA draft.
Davon Jefferson is another story.

Carlin's mugshot after a 1972 arrest for violating obscenity laws by performing the routine "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television." Image from theSmokingGun.com
Hey may have been rude. You could call him irreverent. He admitted to being perversely happy when the supreme court forever labeled him indecent. But whatever you call him, the truth is George Carlin was never afraid to call them like he saw 'em. And June 25th at 8pm, HBO-2 will be rebroadcasting his very first HBO special, "George Carlin at USC". The special was taped at the University of Southern California during the summer of 1977, and if you can't catch it on TV just follow this link to youtube where most of his stand up comedy is available.
Carlin died Sunday, June 22nd in Santa Monica, California. I'll leave you with some pearls of wisdom from the wise comic legend.
"My grandfather would say: "I'm going upstairs to f*&k your grandmother.' He was an honest man, and he wasn't going to bullsh!t a four-year-old. "
Follow the jump for a couple more George Carlin greats.
