Mayo Pro and Con

Some things in USC's favor regarding the O.J. Mayo:
The NCAA did an eligibility check on Mayo before it certified him through the NCAA Clearinghouse.
USC's compliance office also banned Rodney Guillory from receiving tickets to its home games.
Some things not in USC's favor:
Guillory and Louis Johnson, who blew the whistle and went to ESPN, were regular fixtures in the USC locker room at the Galen Center the year before Mayo enrolled.
Guillory had his run of the basketball facilities and Tim Floyd personally informed him when the compliance office denied the tickets.
``Tim Floyd was heartbroken,'' Guillory told me.
None of this is to say USC will or will not be penalized. The first day is always the worst day to make predictions, but that will not stop fans, of course.
Also, the investigations done before Mayo enrolled did not have any of the documentation provided by Johnson to ESPN. So the NCAA will renew its look into Mayo.

officially held his press conference Thursday at the Galen Center announcing that he would forgo his remaining eligibility at USC and enter the 2008 NBA Draft.

USC Awards Night, Mayo MVP

Here's the list of award winners from Monday night's USC basketball banquet. Here's the USC announcement of the awards, highlighted by the MVP Award that went to freshman O.J. Mayo.

LOS ANGELES – The USC men’s basketball team which went 21-12 and made the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, held its annual awards banquet Monday night (March 24) in the Founders Club at the Galen Center.

The Trojans posted back-to-back 20-win seasons for the fi rst time since the 2001-02 seasons and their 63 wins over the last three seasons is the most in a three-year period in school history. USC was a No. 6 seed in the Midwest Regional in the 2008 NCAA Tournament and was
defeated in the fi rst round by Kansas State and Player of the Year candidate Michael Beasley, 80-67. The Trojans tied for third place in the conference with an 11-7 record.

* Freshman O.J. Mayo was named the team MVP as he led USC with a 20.7 average and set the school freshman record for points in a season (684) and three-point baskets made (88). His point total ranks second all-time by a Trojan in a single season (Harold Miner -789 in 1992) and
his three-point baskets made are third best all-time in a single season by a Trojan.

* Sophomore Taj Gibson led USC with 259 rebounds and set the school single-season record for blocks with 84. His two-year total of 153 blocks already places him second on USC’s all-time blocked shots list, trailing only Sam Clancy’s four-year total of 195.

Here's the list of award winners:

* Sam Barry Award -- MVP: O.J. Mayo (20.7 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 40.9 3-pt%, 684 points, 88 three-pointers)

* Joe Barbato Award -- Top FT Percentage: Daniel Hackett (82.3 percent, 8.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.2 apg)

* Dr. James Zumberge Award -- Top GPA: Keith Wilkinson (3.0, Communications, Journalism & Related Studies)

* John Rudometkin Award -- 110% Effort: Taj Gibson (58.0 FG%, 10.8 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 88 blocks)

* Tom Kimmel Award -- Top 6th Man: Angelo Johnson

* Ernie Holbrook Award -- Most Inspirational: Daniel Hackett (8.6 ppg, 94 assists, 82.3 FT %, 34 steals)

* Coaches Award: Dwight Lewis (10.8 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 31 3-pointers, 24 steals)

Hardest Working Band in the History of the Universe

When USC and UCLA tipoff today at the Staples Center it will be the first time the two programs have ever faced each other in the Pac-10 Tournament. It may also be the last time you see the school bands at a hoops rivalry game. Earlier this year, UCLA ended a long tradition by refusing to invite the Spirit of Troy to Pauley Pavilion. They also declined to send their own band to the Galen Center.

Whether you're watching in person or on TV, make sure to enjoy the sounds of the Trojan Marching Band. If you've got some time, check out their 2007 Year-In-Review (after the jump), which chronicles an impressive 452 engagements and 47,677 miles traveled. It's amazing how much work goes into their performances around the nation. Maybe they deserve an invite back across town.

Thanks to Assistant Director Brett Padelford for passing this along from the Spirit of Troy:

2007 was another record-breaking year for the Hardest Working Marching Band in the History of the Universe. This year???s theme was probably ???the road??? as the band traveled 47,677 miles (or the equivalent of nearly two times around the world) on the way to gigs and USC Athletics events. To understand how the Trojan Marching Band fits all the traveling, performing, and practicing in a single year, here is a road trip through 2007.

ANY USC CONTEST, ANYWHERE

USC Athletics is the TMB???s top priority and band members will travel anywhere to support the Trojan teams. In 2007, the band attended 92 USC Athletic events supporting 15 sports, including track & field, water polo, and crew. Band members traveled 25,797 miles in the process while logging 1,035 hours (or more than 43 days) at the games or in transit.

Of course, football comes first and the TMB???s streak of consecutive games attended ??? home or away ??? passed 250 this year at the Coliseum versus Stanford. Currently, after the 2008 Rose Bowl, the band???s remarkable run ??? which started in 1987 ??? rests at 259.

During the 2007 season, the band logged 13,083 miles following the football team to Nebraska, Washington, Indiana, Arizona, and up north to Berkeley for the Weekender. Among The Spirit of Troy???s other destinations this year for sports were Spokane, Washington and East Rutherford, New Jersey with the men???s basketball team for the NCAA tournament and College Station, Texas for the women???s soccer team???s national championship victory in the College Cup. The TMB also traveled to the men???s NCAA Water Polo Championship and women???s Volleyball Championship, both in Northern California.

ALWAYS ANOTHER GIG

When not at a game, the TMB can usually be found on its way to a gig. ???Gigs??? are any band performance that???s not for a USC athletic event, whether it???s a wedding, a university event, a birthday party, a media appearance, or a corporate meeting. The band performed 360 gigs in 2007 or nearly one per day while traveling 21,880 miles and spending 1,412 3???4 hours (or nearly 59 days) on the road or at gigs. Most of the band???s events each year are performed by the small ???10-Piece Band.??? Of the band???s 360 gigs, the 10-Piece performed 280 of them.

Some of the band???s more interesting gigs this year included the opening of Star Wars Celebration IV at the Los Angeles Convention Center, a pre-NFL draft party for USC Wide Receiver Dwayne Jarrett at a Hollywood nightclub, a photo shoot for a portable audio recorder print ad, and a playoffs rally for the Los Angeles Angels at Anaheim Stadium.

In 2007, the band appeared at 48 weddings (plus 1 engagement party, 1 wedding shower, and 2 wedding anniversaries), 34 birthday parties, 12 graduation parties, 8 golf tournaments, 6 retirement parties, and 4 bar mitzvahs. The TMB also performed at 7 corporate events in 2007 for clients like the Walt Disney Company, Russell Athletic, and Neiman Marcus. Non-profit organizations were very important too as the band attended 30 charity events for such causes as the Special Olympics, March of Dimes, and the Junior Blind of America, to name a few.

HOLLYWOOD???S BAND

The TMB is not called ???Hollywood???s Band??? just because the big studios are right down the street. No, the band earns this title every year with all the work it does in front of the camera. In 2007 alone, the band participated in 13 major media events including Jeopardy!, The 2007 ESPY Awards, ???til Death, Mad Money w/ Jim Cramer, and Last Comic Standing. In July, the band was flown back to the ESPN Campus in Bristol, Connecticut to perform for the debut of ESPN???s College Football Live. The band was also asked to appear on 3 local morning news shows in 2007, only 1 of which was in Los Angeles. The other two were KHQ in Spokane, Washington and CW31 in Sacramento, California.

A TYPICALLY BUSY FALL WEEKEND

Fall weekends are the busiest for The Spirit of Troy because its many different commitments all come together at once. For example, during the weekend of the USC vs. Oregon game in Eugene, the band performed 16 gigs from Thursday through Sunday with numerous segments of the band out on Saturday (whether back home in Los Angeles or in Eugene). The sophomore class got to the game on the road, leaving after practice on Thursday night and enduring 1,768 miles and 24 hours on a bus. Earlier that day, a 10-Piece band traveled up north with an alumni group on the train and played at 6 stops on the way to Portland. Meanwhile, after the game on Saturday, the band back home broke into a 10-Piece band that did two gigs, a 40-Piece band for the KIIS-FM Homecoming Concert in Anaheim, and a 30-Piece for a women???s volleyball game at the Galen Center, making five different segments of the band out at once. After three more 10-Pieces on Sunday and including the USC Athletics events, the band had tallied 19 engagements over four days along with 7 hours of practice.

2007 BY-THE-NUMBERS

Total engagements for the band (Gigs & USC Athletic events): 452

Total distance traveled by the band: 47,677 miles (or about 10 roundtrips between LA & New York)

Scheduled practices, sectionals and meetings: 210

Time spent by band members at practices, sectionals, and meetings: 422 1???4 hours

Total time spent by band members at gigs, practices, & athletic events: 2,870 hours or nearly 120 days

Length of band camp in August: 10 days

Practice time during band camp: 67 hours

Most gigs performed in a week: 23 (the week of USC???s graduation)

Overnight trips taken: 21

States visited: 11

Farthest traveled: Bristol, Connecticut

Requests for the band to appear at events: 636

Events in 2008 requested in 2007: 74

Gibson clears path to tourney

In a season in which USC has spent most of its time on an NCAA Tournament tight rope, the win that essentially clinched the Trojans' spot was fittingly a high octane rollercoaster ride.

USC came back from a nine-point first-half deficit, surrendered a 12-point lead late in the second half and hung on for a 93-89 overtime victory against California in front of 9,102 fans at the Galen Center.

The Trojans, who have secured at least a .500 record in the Pac-10, have an opportunity to remove themselves from the proverbial NCAA Tournament "bubble" and firmly plant themselves in the field of 6

Weak-end box office

All those paper fans featuring the head of Will Ferrell that were distributed at the Galen Center the past two weekends could not rescue Will Farrell's new movie, ``Semi-Pro'' from a disappointing opening. The movie took in $15.3 million, about $10 million less than expected.
``Will Ferrell is always a draw and audiences love him. But this particular weekend is not quite as strong as his earlier efforts," said box-office guru Paul Dergarabedian, who is a USC graduate like Ferrell.

Good News for Trojans

Two encouraging occurrences at Galen Center this afternoon.

Here's the first. Parents Weekend has generated an apparent sellout for winless Oregon State today.

Guess it's a double hit when Mom and Dad come to town. Instead of passing on the late afternoon game, the kids come to root for the Trojans because that's what the out-of-town parents would like to do as they catch a glimpse of second-year Galen Center.

And that fills up the student section that was noticeably unfilled Thursday with the crowd of 8,721 that showed up for the Oregon game.

Oregon game crucial for tourney hopes

Regardless of the Pac-10's strength this season, no team from the conference has ever made the tournament after finishing 9-9 in league play. The USC men's basketball team might not know the statistic, but it is aware of its situation.

Tonight's game against Oregon at the Galen Center will play a large role in spelling out both teams' postseason fate, as both the Ducks (15-10, 6-7 Pac-10) and the Trojans (15-9, 6-6) sit on most NCAA Tournament prognosticators' bubbles.

From FoxSports.com:

I completely forgot to report that ex-UConn wing Marcus Johnson was in the USC offices last week when I was out at the Galen Center on Friday. Johnson will not be attending Oregon State and will instead walk-on and play for Tim Floyd and the Trojans.

Marcus was a top 100 player coming out of Westchester High. He has one-year of eligibility remaining, but will likely apply for a medical waiver to gain eligibility he lost for playing in an exhibition game at UConn; his reason for leaving UConn was lack of PT. This is a great pick-up for SC, since Marcus will bring depth to the 2-spot behind Demar DeRozan. Also, coming from UConn, you know he'll have a solid base to work off of and should assimilate quickly into Tim Floyd's system. Marcus won't be a big-time scorer for us, but he's very athletic and at the very least can help defensively. H/T to Sleuth over at USCHoops.com for the link.
