Fred Davis

Tight end Fred Davis is off to a rousing start with the Redskins after failing to appear for practice, which forced the team to call in its security until they learned he overslept. ``He just had a setback," Redskins coach Jim Zorn said of Davis. "Hopefully everybody will learn from the lesson that he is having right now about... more »

Fred Davis was so good last year — and the other receivers were so shaky — that tight end went from a bit part to a leading role in USC’s offense. With Davis gone, is it time for Anthony McCoy’s close-up? McCoy will get first crack at the starting job for next season, though redshirt freshman Rhett Ellison is... more »

The Titans pick 24th overall and need a two-way tight end that can stretch the middle of the field and become a safety valve for quarterback Vince Young.

Two NFL execs that don't need a TE were very high on him.

"He's a special player," said Kevin Colbert, director of football operations for the Steelers. "His receiving ability, it's special."
"I'm very impressed with him," 49ers GM Scott McCloughan said. "The receiving skills, the athleticism and the speed are all there. I think he'll go pretty quick."

Fred Davis hopes to join Greg Olsen, Vernon Davis, Heath Miller, Kellen Winslow, Dallas Clark, Jeremy Shockey, Todd Heap and Bubba Franks as tight ends who were first off the board.

Hazelton makes a one-handed grab in the 2007 opener. Frank Bellino/Riverside Press-Enterprise

Sophomore Vidal Hazelton, who hauled in 50 receptions for 540-yards in 2007, has undergone stomach surgery to repair two muscle tears - according to Press-Telegram. The lanky, 6-3 wide-receiver was sometimes criticized for a lack of explosive speed during his breakout season, despite averaging 10.8 yards per catch. But whatever perceived "deficit" he may have had, it was likely caused by a nagging internal injury. And somehow despite the pain, Hazelton managed to man-up, play through and make major contributions to the Trojan offense.

Hazelton played last season with what was believed to be a groin injury but it turned out to be multiple stomach tears. He is expected to be fully recovered for spring practice, which begins next month.

Hazelton finished the 2007 season third on the USC's receiver-roster in total yards, only behind TE Fred Davis (881 yds) and Patrick Turner (569 yds). With Fred Davis likely to go first round in the NFL draft, a healthy Hazelton will likely factor in as a strong component in the Trojans' 2008 receiving-strategy. Expect another grab like the one pictured above in the '08 opener against Virginia.

From FoxSports.com:1. OL Jeff Byers, USC In terms of perseverance, you might need to break out a sixth star for Byers, who battled his way back from serious injuries to start at guard last season and play in 13 games. After looking like a blue-chipper as a true freshman in 2004, he missed all of 2005 and 2006 with... more »

The nations top seniors are convening in Mobile Alabama to begin preperations for the 2008 Under Armour Senior Bowl, January 26th 2008. The NFL scouts are showing up right behind them. At first report there were 7 Trojans playing in the bowl, now it's up to nine! It's a familiar coaching scene for the Trojans who play for team North, as they will be coached by former Trojan OC and current Oakland Raiders head-coach Lane Kiffin. USC players on the squad include the likes of Sam Baker, John David Booty, Fred Davis, Sedrick Ellis, Lawrence Jackson, Drew Radovich, Keith Rivers, Terrell Thomas and Chauncey Washington.

With that many Trojan players on the field, it's going to be like a good old fashion USC football game.

Opinion: No. 6 Southern California, now 11-2, doesn’t have a chance of convincing enough pollsters that it deserves at least a small share of a divided national championship despite this dominant victory in the 94th Rose Bowl on Tuesday. But that doesn’t mean that at this very moment the Trojans couldn't be the best college football team in the... more »
