'SC Lands Top S.C. Receiver

Will the real SC please stand up?

South Carolina native and four star receiver Alshon Jeffrey has given USC a solid verbal to add himself to the Trojans' already phenomenal '09 class. The 6'-3, 214lbs Jeffrey called USC his "dream school" and is touted by Rivals as the #16th ranked receiver in the nation. But Jeffrey's talent isn't limited to receiving alone. The Calhoun County High School star puts Bo Jackson to shame, playing wide receiver on offense, safety on defense in addition to being an award winning basketball forward. The TandD.com reported in November of 2007:

On the football field, Jeffrey finished the year with 33 receptions for 855 yards and 12 touchdowns on offense and 25 tackles, seven interceptions and two touchdowns [as a safety] on defense. On the basketball court last season, he was named the Region 4-A Player of the Year and was an All-State selection after averaging 17.9 points, five rebounds and five assists per game while helping lead the Saints to a perfect 28-0 record and a Class A State Championship win over Baptist Hill.

Jeffrey chose to play football for the Trojans despite basketball offers from powerhouses North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky, and over football offers from top programs like Tennessee, Alabama, Clemson, South Carolina, Florida, Florida State and Colorado.

CFN posts its 2008 Bowl Game Predictions

There's something about the month of May in the college off-season that brings out the Nostradamus in all of us. Next up with the crystal ball: College Football News with their 2008 predictions for the bowl games and BCS games.

A few highlights....

Champs Sports Bowl ... Virginia vs. Illinois
Meineke Car Care Bowl ... Florida State vs. Pitt
Texas Bowl ... Colorado vs. Rutgers
PetroSun Independence Bowl ... Nebraska vs. Arkansas
Alamo Bowl ... Michigan State vs. Kansas
Pacific Life Holiday Bowl ... Texas vs. Oregon
Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl ... Wake Forest vs. Alabama
Chick-fil-A Bowl ... Boston College vs. South Carolina
Outback Bowl ... Michigan vs. LSU
Konica Minolta Gator Bowl ... Miami vs. Notre Dame
Capital One Bowl ... Penn State vs. Auburn
AT&T Cotton Bowl ... Oklahoma vs. Tennessee

Rose Bowl presented by Citi ... Wisconsin vs. USC
CFN is basically rubber stamping the winner of USC - Ohio State into the National Championship game. From the outcome of this prediction, I guess CFN is throwing in with the Buckeyes. This one looks dead on to me, unless USC ends up in the championship game, then this one becomes tOSU against the Sun Devils.

Allstate Sugar Bowl ... Georgia vs. Virginia Tech
By putting the Bulldogs into the Sugar, CFN is calling the WLOCP the defacto SEC championship. Take that as you will, Georgia fans. Va Tech looks like the class of the ACC, but CFN pulls them into the Sugar as an at-large. If there's one conference that has proven itself to be way to whacked out to predict, it's the ACC. I think Georgia/Arkansas are safe SEC picks, but give me Clemson from the ACC side.

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl ... Missouri vs. West Virginia
The Fiesta gets its traditional first pick of the at-large teams and takes the 'Eers. I'm not sure that Missouri will be the Big XII champs. CFN is hedging, with Texas Tech as their second choice, but... I wouldn't count out the Sooners... ever. I think Oklahoma - West Virginia makes more sense.

FedEx Orange Bowl ... Clemson vs. Texas Tech
If there is one prediction that I think is off the mark, it's CFN's prognostication for the Orange. I would be willing to take the field here at any odds, because I don't see a Tigers - Red Raiders matchup in Miami. I think the Hokies are the most likely candidate here for the ACC, versus an at-large team. For my prediction, give me VaTech (ACC Champs) versus Arizona State (at-large) or maybe even Utah (at-large).

FedEx BCS National Championship ... Ohio State vs. Florida
The Buckeyes and Gators in the National Championship game... where have we seen that before? This one is just as likely to be USC-Florida, which would probably be the highest rated college football game ever. If Florida gets to the BCS title game and wins, I think you will have seen the last of #15 in orange and blue. Just sayin'.

Pat Ruel Named Top Recruiter in Pac-10 for 2008

From Rivals.com:

PAT RUEL – USC

BUZZ: Ruel was a serious candidate for national recruiter of the year with an average star ranking for his six signees of 4.17.

He helped recruit five-star offensive linemen Matt Kalil and Tyron Smith, but he helped pull in one of the biggest Signing Day surprises when he able to get Rivals100 cornerback T.J. Bryant away from the grips of Miami and Florida State.

Coach Ruel was also named one of the top 25 recruiters nationally. Also have to give credit to Coach Seto for helping with T.J. Bryant. Excellent job by both coaches.

Recruiting Rankings Wrapup

Recruiting rankings can be subjective, but here's one way to evaluate. Who else recruited each player? Nick Perry chose USC over Michigan. T.J. Bryant chose USC over Florida State, Florida, Miami, Alabama and LSU. Brice Butler chose USC over Georgia. Blake Ayles could have gone to Ohio State.
Now it cuts both ways. Malik Jackson was headed to Fresno State and Brian Baucham was on his way to Washington State. But that's the point when looking at the class overall.

2008 Recruiting Dinner

The scene was on court at the Galen Center again, where a couple times Pete Carroll expressed his desire to see Tim Floyd's bunch hand the Bruins another loss this year.

Carroll said this class was about "bigs" not "flash" and he felt fortunate that the Trojans were in a position to play it this way, this year. Joe McKnight was sure excited about the 5 solid offensive line prospects.

After the jump are some notes from last nights event.

Ellis Keeps Streak Alive

The College Football News always tries to do things differently -- and so they did with their All-America team this year. But one thing they didn't do differently was keep USC nose tackle Sedrick Ellis' All-American streak alive. He's been named first-team on every single one released to date.

But naming Oregon's Dennis Dixon as the No. 7 quarterback in the nation and running back Jonathan Stewart the No. 6 running back? Please. Don't be that dumb.

USC fans may want to take note. CFN.com has Illinois RB Rashard Mendenhall second-team, four spots ahead of Stewart.

Nice hit for Rialto grad Ryan Grice-Mullen, one of Hawaii's wide receivers, who was named second team. Another Rialto guy, Boise State's Ryan Clady, was named second team offensive line along with USC tackle Sam Baker and tight end Fred Davis.

USC DE Lawrence Jackson made third team while LBs Keith Rivers and Rey Maualuga were honorable mention, as was Oregon's Patrick Chung of Raqncho Cucamonga.

Those teams play again Saturday, but will Sterger be around? According to Sports By Brooks, she has adopted a new team, trading in the Garnet and Gold (digger) of Florida State for the Green and Gold (digger) of South Florida.

Sterger, shown in her new colors of the 6-0 Bulls, left, appears to have lost her lust for 4-2 Seminoles. And not all South Florida fans are happy to have the bandwagoner along for the ride.

Upset Special

It was an upset sort of weekend for college football's elite. Nine of the AP-25 teams awoke with hangovers; the foul taste of defeat in their mouths. Five of the losing teams were previously ranked in the top ten. And to make matters worse only two of the losing teams, West Virginia and Oregon, fell to ranked opponents.

The first domino fell on Friday night when run-heavy #5 West Virginia went down against a more balanced #18 South Florida. This started the chain reaction that would tear through college football's top-teams. #3 Oklahoma blew a 24-7 lead, succumbing to Colorado in a last minute field goal. The national champion Florida Gators #4 followed suit, upset by a last minute field goal by Auburn, the same team that upset the one-loss Gators last season.

Things Are Heating Up in the Desert

The Sun Devils play eight games at home, including the first four. You could make an argument for Arizona State to be 7-0 entering an Oct. 27 home game against California. Then comes the meat of the schedule, with road games at Oregon and UCLA and home games against USC and rival Arizona. We have the fine site Pitchfork Nation to thank for sending us this schedule.

Poster schedules: Florida State, Wyoming, Vanderbilt, Pittsburgh, Arkansas, Kent State, Navy, Duke, Purdue, Missouri, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Middle Tennessee, Brigham Young, Syracuse, Louisiana Tech, South Florida, Colorado, Southern Mississippi, Washington State, Kentucky, Houston, Toledo, Iowa State, North Texas.
