Practice Insider: McKnight handling adversity

<!--start image--><!-- end image-->Turf toe. Jock itch. Smashed fingers. A dislocated elbow. Migraine headaches. Sophomore running back Joe McKnight's already been through a lot this season. Then before taking the field against Cal, he got word that his grandmother had passed away. After missing Tuesday's practice to head back to Louisiana, McKnight returned to Howard Jones Field Wednesday. Go inside for more on McKnight, Fili Moala and Averell Spicer

McKnight Status

Tailback Joe McKnight said he expects to play Saturday but the coaches are less certain and will wait until tomorrow's practice to make a decision.
``If he can do stuff tomorrow and Friday, it will be a bonus for us if he can play,'' offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian said.
``We're hoping,'' running backs coach Todd McNair said.
Stanley Havili practiced without problems along with Vidal Hazelton. Fili Moala sprained his ankle but is expected to be OK.

USC football: Damian Williams dinged

** USC receiver Damian Williams landed awkwardly on his right shoulder while trying to catch a pass and missed the latter half of practice. He said afterward that he had a slight sprain but that it wasn’t bad enough to get X-rays. “I’m fine,” Williams said.

** Tailback Joe McKnight, on the mend from turf toe, mostly worked on the side doing lunges and squats. He said he’ll play Saturday, but offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian said McKnight playing would be a “bonus.”

** Fullback Stanley Havili returned to practice after missing time because of a sprained left ankle.

** Defensive tackle Fili Moala rolled his right ankle toward the end of practice but was walking without ice or a limp afterward.

The education of Everson Griffen

USC sophomore defensive end Everson Griffen is destined for greatness … if he works at it.

That was the consensus among the players and coaches I spoke to for a profile on Griffen in advance of Thursday night’s game against Oregon State

To give you an indication of what his fellow Trojans think of him, here’s veteran defensive tackle Fili Moala’s take:

“Everson is a guy who has a lot of talent. Extremely athletic. Extremely fast. And as strong as an ox. He has all the attributes of a great pass rusher, a great defensive end. He’s smart, and he works hard when he wants to.

“He’s young right now in the system. He’s still at times kind of figuring things out. But … he has everything to play at the next level.

“The potential for this guy is endless. He really does some amazing things. You see flashes like, ‘Man, this guy could be great.’ “

Practice Insider: Nothing wrong with Corvallis

<!--start image--><!-- end image-->After a failed two-point conversion in Corvallis, Ore., the Trojans walked off the field defeated for the first time in 2006 as Oregon State fans rushed the field.
One-on-One with USC DT Fili Moala

I wanted to ask the players what the capitol of Virginia was. I wasn’t even certain myself. (My guess was Richmond, which is correct — whew). But that party was spoiled by one who shall remain nameless (Paul). I fortunately had more in my arsenal.

So here it is, an all-Virginia five-question pop quiz between myself and DT Fili Moala.

1. Question: What do you know about Virginia?

Fili Moala: It’s a very prestigious school. A lot of big names have come out of there, senators and all types of people like that. They have history.

My answer: Allen Iverson was born in Hampton.

The correct answer: Twelve senators have graduated from Virginia, as well as other historical people. Iverson was also born there.

Point goes to: Me. We talkin’ ‘bout birthplace, man.

2. Question: Which Trojan might have a breakout game?

FM: I’d have to say Clay Matthews. He’s just so explosive. He’s a smart football player. He’s a good utility guy. He plays linebacker, defensive end. He plays all around the field and is a great pass rusher.

My answer: I was going to say kicker David Buehler but I noticed he’s shaved his Mohawk. I’m too sad to answer this one.

Point goes to: Moala. His answer came out of nowhere.

CFN's Unit Rankings

College Football News ranks the different units from around the country. USC makes a splash on defense but not surprisingly they struggle to get a lot of recognition on offense. I am not going to comment on this too much as this is pretty accurate from an SC standpoint. This is more for just general knowledge.

2008 CFN Unit Rankings

Defenses

Safeties Kevin Ellison and Taylor Mays are among six players with starting experience. Even without current pros Sedrick Ellis and Lawrence Jackson, the defensive line will be just fine. On the outside, speedy Everson Griffen is good enough to make folks forget about Jackson. On the inside, senior Fili Moala is about to shed his anonymity while making a strong push for All-American honors and a spot in the first round of next year’s NFL Draft.

The battle between Mark Sanchez and Mitch Mustain to replace John David Booty at quarterback isn’t exactly over. Sanchez got the nod in April, but he got hurt and is questionable for the start of the season. Mustain has done nothing but impress the staff since transferring from Arkansas. Whoever gets the ball will have gobs of speed and explosiveness surrounding him. After getting a taste of action as a freshman, RB Joe McKnight is on the tarmac and preparing for national lift-off. The receivers are a year older, with the size, athleticism, and addition of former Hog Damian Williams to dominate opposing secondaries. The line loses four starters, putting the onus on sophomores Kristofer O’Dowd, Butch Lewis, and Zack Heberer to perform like vets.

There’s more than enough returning talent and former prep All-Americans to run that streak to three, although a few more interceptions would be nice. In Kevin Ellison and Taylor Mays, USC is home to a couple of hard-hitting enforcers with All-America potential. If Josh Pinkard is even close to where he was a couple of years ago, no program in the country will be able to match them at the position. Sure to get picked on early, Shareece Wright needs to give opposing quarterbacks a reason to not look to his side.

Fili Moala and Everson Griffen are the new headliners of a front wall that’ll rely on a deeper group of players this fall. The Trojans are so quick and strong up front, opposing backs are rarely able to get to the second level. Of course, not that things get any easier there. Led by Maualuga and Cushing, this group has a nose for the football and a gift for fighting through blockers to get to the ball carrier.
The 2008 HP All-American Defensive Team

Yesterday, we unveiled the All-American offensive squad, now here are the defenders:

Defensive End

1st Team–Everson Griffen, USC; Greg Middleton, Indiana

Middleton was a 2007 HP All-American and should have another great year. Griffen is a physical phenom who is ready to explode on the college scene.

2nd Team–Greg Hardy, Ole Miss; George Selvie, USF

3rd Team–Nick Reed, Oregon; Ricky Sapp, Clemson

Defensive Tackle

1st Team–Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma; Ricky Jean-Francois, LSU

McCoy will key the interior of the Sooner defense, while Jean-Francois is a unique jumbo athlete who should finally put it all together on the field (just like he did in the BCS Title Game) for a whole season.

2nd Team–Fili Moala, USC; Geno Atkins, Georgia

3rd Team–Brian Price, UCLA; Marvin Austin, North Carolina

Outside Linebacker

1st Team–Brian Toal, Boston College; Marcus Freeman, Ohio State

Seems like Toal has been making tackles forever. Freeman is underrated playing in the shadow of Laurinaitis.

2nd Team–Brian Cushing, USC; Rico McCoy, Tennessee

3rd Team–Clinton Snyder, Stanford; Ryan Reynolds, Oklahoma

Middle Linebacker

1st Team–Brandon Spikes, Florida

Spikes did it all for the Gators last year, accumulating 131 tackles, including 14.5 for losses.

2nd Team–Rey Maualuga, USC

3rd Team–James Laurinaitis, Ohio State

Cornerback

1st Team–Walter Thurmond, Oregon; Vontae Davis, Illinois

Thurmond had 103 tackles, 8 TFL, 18 deflections and 5 interceptions. Vontae Davis is a future first-rounder who was a shut-down corner for the Illini.

2nd Team–Malcolm Jenkins, Ohio State; Victor Harris, Virginia Tech

3rd Team–Syd’Quan Thompson, Cal; Tony Carter, Florida State

Strong Safety

1st Team–Patrick Chung, Oregon

Chung had 117 tackles and 7.5 TFL last year.

2nd Team–Chad Jones, LSU

3rd Team–Kevin Ellison, USC

Free Safety

1st Team–Taylor Mays, USC

Mays is a physical freak who will probably be the first safety taken in the next draft.

2nd Team–William Moore, Missouri

3rd Team–Rashad Johnson, Alabama

Sorry, no punters or kickers or return guys on this team.

A past ESPN article estimated that "a Samoan boy is 40 times more likely to reach the NFL than a boy growing up in the United States." And there's good reason why. USC knows firsthand the physicality, size and strength of their Polynesian Trojan players. With the nation's top trainers and one of the largest national platforms, USC has helped its Poly-players (both native and ancestral) excel in the next level. Just take a look at Junior Seau or Lofa Tatupu or Troy Polamalu and the soon to be NFLers Rey Maualuga and Fili Moala...just to name a few.

Now there's a new name on that list. USC's 11th addition to its already stellar '09 class is Tongan native Hebron Fangupo. A JC transfer out of Mt. San Antonio College, the 6-2, 330-pound defensive tackle has the raw size, speed and talent to become the next Polynesian super star. As reported on Scout, Fangupo had this to say of his new-found home:

"I like the tempo. I just like the coaching environment. I like coaches that get a little crazy because I like to get crazy....As a Polynesian, we have a scream that we do before we go into battle, and he (Coach Watson) just kept doing it. I liked that because he has been around a few Polynesians and knows how we work."

By the time you hear that war cry...it will already be too late.

Bruce Feldman's Final Draft Analysis

A great weekend for the USC program cemented just how amazing the Trojans' 2003 recruiting class was. Sedrick Ellis, Sam Baker and Lawrence Jackson are the three latest members of USC's 2003 class, which I think should go down as the best recruiting class in modern college football history (i.e. when teams couldn't sign as many recruits as they want), to be drafted in the first round, joining Reggie Bush from two years ago. As of now, the Trojans have an astounding nine first-day draft picks from that class: Baker, Bush, Ellis, Jackson, Ryan Kalil, Steve Smith, Terrell Thomas, LenDale White and Eric Wright. (There also could be a 10th coming in 2009 when DT Fili Moala comes through.) Other USC '03s that have been drafted are John David Booty, Will Poole, Chauncey Washington and Thomas Williams.

Practice Insider: Christian Tupou's Huge Day

<!--start image--><!-- end image-->The few hundred fans that braved the 70-degree weather and attended practice Thursday afternoon at Howard Jones Field saw something special from sophomore Christian Tupou. With Fili Moala and Gerald Washington missing practice, coupled with the slew of injuries the defensive line was already facing, Tupou played nearly every snap of Thursday's practice with an intensity and vigor that is rarely seen
