We are two weeks in and the Heisman race is starting to whittle down somewhat.  Remember, this list is of those who have a shot to actually win the trophy, so others who will get Heisman votes in the end may not be here: 1. Colt McCoy, Texas–McCoy threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns against Wyoming and added... more »

Yes, that photo is exactly what it looks like. The Tennessee Volunteers turning Deadspin into OutSports. It seems Lane Kiffin rewarded those players who kept in shape over the summer by letting them pose for the team poster. It also seems that bare chests and muscle cars are mandatory in Kiffin's "gift." Honestly, if it weren't for Layla Kiffin's... more »

Bruce Feldman at ESPN.com interviewed Taylor Mays this week. You must be an ESPN insider to read the entire feature (basically you need to have a paid subscription to read certain articles).

If you are insider, here is the link. If you aren’t, I don’t think it is that expensive to sign up. Luckily for you I am an insider and here two highlights from the interview:

Feldman: “What do you think it would take, as a defensive player who doesn't return kicks, to get Heisman consideration?”

Mays: Well, I think I just have to catch the ball. That's what Eric Berry does so well. That's what Ed Reed does so well. Those plays change the game for their teams. It really hasn't been to my role, but I have to have that mindset that, "OK, the ball's in the air, get to it and catch it." And if I get the ball in my hands, I don't think I'm going to get tackled, and that's the next step I can take as a player. And I am ready to do that. I feel like I'm a lot better player going into this season than I was last year.

Feldman: “How badly would you like to play both ways and get some work on offense?”

Mays: We'll see. I don't think it's something that needs to be practiced a lot. I know our whole offensive playbook as well as I know the defensive playbook. I know what's going on. Throw me the hitch. Let me stiff-arm the quarterback (TrojanWire note: I think he meant cornerback), and I'll get some yards.

It is a very candid interview with arguably the best defensive player in the country. To read the full interview, click here.

In my opinion, the NFL draft is the worst television event in sports.  It’s a complete waste of time but, hey, it’s April, so what else are you going to do?  Here are my thoughts on this year’s proceedings: —Can we all agree that Mel Kiper and Todd McShay’s opinions should be taken for entertainment purposes only?  They are... more »

According to the latest ESPN and Scout 2007 Recruit Rankings, USC's class is already looking like another #1. Amongst the highlights of our early verbal commitments:

Marc Tyler - RB (ESPN #1, Scout #7)
Chris Galippo - LB (ESPN #2, Scout #14)
Marshall Jones - S (ESPN #9, Scout Top 200)
James Wilson - OL (ESPN #40, Scout #48)
Aaron Corp - QB (ESPN #51, Scout #68)

And those are just some of the current commitments -- there are still the likes of stud RBs Noel Devine and Joe McKnight, top WRs Arrelious Benn and Terrance Toliver, blue-chip DBs Eric Berry and Ronald Johnson, and monster defensive linemen Marvin Austin, Martez Wilson, and Everson Griffen (just to name a few) all listing USC as one of the schools they're considering. (The Fanhouse has a more thorough list of the tantalizing recruits considering joining the Class of 2007.)

To all of you kids out there, we're not sure if we're even allowed to address you directly without breaking NCAA rules -- but if you're reading this -- trust us, you want to come to USC.
