Trojans Still Active In The Playoffs

A former USC Trojan will play in this years Super Bowl and there will be at least one on each team. Well, kind of... Here are former Trojans that still have a shot at a Super Bowl appearance.

New York Jets: Mark Sanchez and Chauncey Washington
Indianapolis Colts: Fili Moala
New Orleans Saints: Reggie Bush, Sedrick Ellis and Billy Miller (Injured Reserve)
Minnesota Vikings: Offensive lineman Drew Radovich is the "kind of," he is not on the active roster, but on the practice squad.

I am rooting for a Jets vs. Saints match up. Nothing would please me more than seeing Sedrick Ellis sack Mark Sanchez.

If you can predict the future and know who will win this weekend or who will win the big game on February 7th, go here to bet on the Super Bowl.

NFL DRAFT: Jaguars Double-Dip into Trojan Talent Pool, Draft Washington

Chauncey Washington for President; '06 &'07 Highlights

Then the Jaguars double-dipped into the Trojan talent pool, grabbing runningback Chauncey Washington with the 6th pick of the 7th round. Washington came to the Trojans in the same '03 class as Lendale White and Reggie Bush. But injuries had him sidelined in '03 and redshirt in '04 and '05. But as they saying goes, patience ended up being Washington's greatest virtue.

With the departure of Bush and White to the NFL, and USC's tailback situation in question, Washington was the back who stepped up. He led the Trojans in rushing in 2006 with 744 yards and 9 TDs. Then in 2007, Washington kicked it up a notch. Even with young-uns Joe McKnight and Stafon Johnson as viable tailback options, Chauncey Washington was the choice for O.C. Sarkisian and Pete Carroll. Washington received more than double the carries as any other tailback, and led the Trojans with 969 yards and 10 TDs. 220 of his near 1,000 yards came from a remarkable career-high game, with Washington running all over a very soggy Cal Bears.

Washington is a sizable north-south runner with excellent vision, power and blocking ability, reminiscent of the Lendale White style of game. He should become a solid combo punch along with Jacksonville's Fred Taylor (1202 yards, 5 TDs in 2007) and Maurice Jones Drew (768 yards, 9 TDs).

Overall it has been an excellent two days for the Trojans, with 10 out of 12 players getting selected in the draft. Only guard Drew Radovich and center Matt Spanos remain undrafted. Both would be steals as free agent picks.

Kiffin Coaches the North, Nine Trojans

The nations top seniors are convening in Mobile Alabama to begin preperations for the 2008 Under Armour Senior Bowl, January 26th 2008. The NFL scouts are showing up right behind them. At first report there were 7 Trojans playing in the bowl, now it's up to nine! It's a familiar coaching scene for the Trojans who play for team North, as they will be coached by former Trojan OC and current Oakland Raiders head-coach Lane Kiffin. USC players on the squad include the likes of Sam Baker, John David Booty, Fred Davis, Sedrick Ellis, Lawrence Jackson, Drew Radovich, Keith Rivers, Terrell Thomas and Chauncey Washington.

With that many Trojan players on the field, it's going to be like a good old fashion USC football game.

Post-Practice Update

Chilo Rachal did not practice because he was sick while Drew Radovich is also battling a stomach virus. Kyle Moore intercepted a tipped John David Booty pass, which drew comparisons to a famously tipped pass about a year ago.
While yesterday's practice bothered Pete Carroll for a lack of enthusiasm, today's was considered much better.

Practice Report

John David Booty enjoyed a better than expected practice and surprised Pete Carroll. But he still has swelling in his finger and the ball sometimes sails because of the injury.
Mark Sanchez looks on track to start (no promises!).
Sam Baker practiced and will play. Drew Radovich sat out with a sore back. Joe McKnight got hit in the back but is OK.

From 14 to 7, USC's O Line on the Decline

USC's offensive line wasn't all that deep when it started in August with 14.

But today on the way out to practice, that number will be seven -- healthy bodies able to go all-out.

With injured and limited players, make that 10, or one-deep Pete Carroll said, when the teams split up into offense and defense.

Here are the "healthy'' ones: Jeff Byers (broken thumb), Matt Spanos (torn triceps, gashed finger), Tiny Malu (hamstring), Butch Lewis (ankle sprain), Drew Radovich, Alex Parsons and Thomas Herring (ankle sprain).

The other seven, starting with All-American Sam Baker's hamstring pull, are far worse off than the above. Will all the more injured return for Notre Dame Saturday, Carroll was asked.

"They won't,'' he said. Not all of them.

Tuesday Insider: You're a starting tackle, Charles Brown

<!--start image--><!-- end image-->Charles Brown was thrust into the mix with Drew Radovich's back injury. Boosted by his consistency during fall camp -- "I didn't make too many mistakes" -- he has earned the starting job, for now. His own back problem lingers, but it "feels good enough

Good Thing Baker Held Out

Maybe it's just good fortune that USC decided to hold All-American offensive tackle Sam Baker out of practice the last two days with what was described as a strained oblique muscle in his rib cage.

After X-rays Tuesday, it turns out that Baker has a hairline crack of a rib and will be out through the weekend, giving Charles Brown and Thomas Herring a few more days as starters.

Drew Radovich was making some progress with his lower back strain, getting into shoulder pads for the first time in the afternoon, but not having worked since before the start of practice, he's not in shape to play, Carroll said.

USC tackle Brown close to starting

Scott Wolf, LA Daily News

USC offensive tackle Charles Brown filled in as a starter since training camp opened because senior Drew Radovich is out with a back injury. But as the first week closes, Brown is on the verge of winning the position outright based on his performances. “He’s really close to winning the job,” offensive line coach Pat Ruel said. “He’s making calls at the line, I’m real impressed. If he just gets a little more physical, he’ll be fine.” continue

Charles Brown is the No. 1 tackle with Drew Radovich with a back injury.
"He looks pretty good," offensive line coach Pat Ruel said.
Another tackle to watch is Butch Lewis, who is 270 pounds and still trying to make up for his massive weight loss after catching a virus in Mexico.
"Butch is a guy who's always going to play a little bit better because he's smart," Ruel said. "But it's going to hurt him some."
