USC attracts top talent to campus

(AP Photo/Gus Ruelas)" style="margin:0 5px 5px 0" />Rivals.com: There are many reasons USC is the nation’s most successful recruiting program since Pete Carroll stepped on campus. One of the biggest reasons is the type of players who end up attending USC’s Rising Stars Camp each summer.

Ohio State-USC: A Preview

Just got my tickets for OSU-USC next year and I’m so pumped for this game. This is probably going to be the game of the year, kudos to USC and Ohio State for scheduling it. Coach Pete Carroll stays true to his word when he says he is ready to play anybody, anywhere. Of course things can change during the actual season. This will be USC’s second game and Ohio State’s third, so you never know what’s going to happen.

EDSBS HEROES: PHIL AT HUMANITARIAN CAMP

Commenter OC Phil attended the grown-up football fantasy camp, and two great things happened to him. First, his knee didn’t explode, and for that we say huzzah, sir.

Second, he got Pete in frame with an EDSBS shirt, and for that, we give the illustrious ONE HUNDRED COCKTAILS of his choosing to him.

We are so jacked about this.

Just having our logo with COACH Pete Carroll makes us a better person. Not “feel” like a better person; no, it actually makes us better by association, and you by reading it. Pete would love to chat, but he’s got to sign an 11 year old running back and then birth a baby in an elevator for a single mother trapped in an old building over in East L.A.

USC football assistant Watson to take leave

USC assistant coach Dave Watson is taking a personal leave from the football program for the rest of the month. Watson was arrested in El Segundo last month on suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription drugs. He was cited after being involved in a minor collision. “He’s taking a little break because he’s working on some family stuff,” USC coach Pete Carroll said. “He’s going to be out for the next few weeks.”

Mustain has less of ‘edge’ as backup

It’s been a rough week for USC quarterback Mitch Mustain, who met with Trojans coach Pete Carroll after losing the starting job to Mark Sanchez and admitted he was still in a funk during Thursday’s practice. “It takes a little bit of that edge away,” Mustain said. It does (affect you) a little bit.” Maybe that is one reason he was critical of his performance Thursday.

The Saban rule

The rule that prevents football coaches from going out on the road recruiting in the spring is a big nuisance to USC coach Pete Carroll, but I wouldn't call it the The Carroll Rule. We hear the rule was actually pushed by SEC coaches, unhappy with some of Alabama coach Nick Saban's recruiting methods.

USC head coach Pete Carroll is pleased with the productive nature of his practices so far and shares his thoughts on several of his more competitive position groups.

Pete Carroll: Win Forever

USC head football coach Pete Carroll knows what he has to do to become the Wizard of University Park–Win Forever.

“Trophies are nice, but we want to Win Forever,” said Carroll, who admittedly has never worn his championship rings and whose office doesn’t feature a single trophy. He often gives away the coach-of-the-year plaques and individual awards he receives.

Winning forever is much more than winning next Saturday’s game. It’s about maximizing the opportunities in front of you, Carroll says, so that each player can become the best he can be and each team can achieve its fullest potential.

“Of course we want to win every game, but winning forever is simply realizing your potential and making yourself as good as you can be,” Carroll said. “Realizing that is a tremendous accomplishment, whether it’s football or in life.”

Of course, the University hopes he will add two words to that mantra–Win Forever, at USC!

First Signs of Spring

While much of the country hasn't begun to thaw out, the Trojans started spring practice under beautiful SoCal skies. At first it seemed like there might be a little rust, but then Joe McKnight would take a fast step or Christian Tupou would show some muscle and the team looked sharp as always.

All eyes are on the battle at quarterback battle but there's little to report on that front. Mark Sanchez is still the leader and Mitch Mustain is hot on his tail. Aaron Corp, who used to look pretty lanky, seemed much more solid (he's added 18 pounds since coming to USC). Coach Pete Carroll remained noncommittal on whether he'll even name a starter by the end of the 15-session camp. Regardless, the fact that USC has a trio of five-star recruits competing for quarterback should frighten the bejebus out of their opponents in 2008.

Yet another five-star quarterback, Matt Barkley, was also on the practice field. He was just stopping by since he's only a junior in high school. The youngest ever Gatorade National Player of the Year has already committed to the Trojans.

There will be several other compelling position battles to watch. Ricky Rosas, special assistant to Pete Carroll and Gatorade bartender extraordinaire, said he plans on paying special attention to the tailbacks and wide receivers. Similar to last year, USC has an embarrassment of riches in their backfield. In the receiving corps, transfer Damian Williams from Arkansas was a breath of fresh air and looks ready to make a big impact.

Speaking of Ricky and Barkley, both are nominated in the 2008 Southern California Sports Awards put on by ESPN 710.

LA Times football writer Gary Klein stopped by after practice to talk shop -- click play to get some more reflections on USC's first day back in the trenches:

You can also catch a few minutes from Pete Carroll's post-practice media gaggle:

UPDATE: If you listen to the audio above, Carroll doesn't get pinned down on naming a quarterback by the end of camp, merely saying, "That'd be nice ... I don't care when it happens." But offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian left little doubt that it will happen by April 19. I wouldn't call that a discrepancy, just more specificity.

USC quarterbacks ready for run at starting job

USC coach Pete Carroll has had three cars parked in his driveway for some time now. One has been a three-week loaner, the other two have not been out for a test drive. Mark Sanchez, Mitch Mustain and Aaron Corp will be on full display when the Trojans commence spring practice Tuesday. With USC likely to open the season ranked in the top 5, its quarterback competition could be a national storyline in college football this spring.
