Booty, Jackson on Camp Watch List

New Haven, Conn. The Walter Camp Footballl Foundation has announced the
names of 35 players to watch for its prestigious Player of the Year
award, the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade.

"We are proud to continue the great work of Walter Camp and recognize the
best college football players in the nation,'' Foundation president John
Barbarotta said. "This watch list is a great start to what is shaping up
to be another exciting year of college football.''

> The watch list will be narrowed to ten semi-finalists in early November.
The 2007 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by
the 119 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information
directors, will be announced on the ESPN/Home Depot College Football
Awards Show in December. The winner will then receive his trophy at the
Foundation's annual national awards banquet on January 12, 2008 at the

Walter Camp, “The Father of American football,” first selected an
All-America team in 1889. Camp a formeer Yale University athlete and
football coach is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set
plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of
play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation ( www.waltercamp.org) a New Haven-based all-volunteer group wa was founded
in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of
selecting annually an All-America team.

Booty Is the Man to Beat in Heisman Chase

USC quarterback John David Booty, left, is the frontrunner to win the Heisman, according to odds listed on the site Bodog.

Three of the past five Heismans have gone to players from USC, including quarterbacks Carson Palmer in 2002 and Matt Leinart in 2004. Reggie Bush won the award in 2005.

Chris Huston, who runs the site Heisman Pundit, outlined several reasons why Booty was considered the frontrunner when he was a guest on the radio show last weekend. You can listen to that interview by clicking here.

Huston also mentioned several darkhorse candidates, including Nebraska quarterback Sam Keller, who was not singled out on Bodog's list. Keller falls under field (all other players) and his chances are 7-1.

Unlike Booty, Keller's campaign is unique. His chances are not as strongly tied to Nebraska's record, much like Booty's are to USC, and he will have the opportunity to put up monster games against some questionable secondaries in the Big 12.

Here are the current Heisman odds:
4-1
John David Booty, USC
5-1
Darren McFadden, Arkansas
7-2
Brian Brohm, Louisville
9-2
Steve Slaton, West Virginia
7-1
Colt Brennan, Hawaii; Ray Rice, Rutgers
8-1
Mike Hart, Michigan
10-1
Tim Tebow, Florida
14-1
Pat White, West Virginia
15-1
Chad Henne, Michigan; C.J.
More Like Sprinkles & Piddles Last Night

You might have heard (even though we didn't bother reporting it) earlier this week that Clemson tailback C.J. Spiller, high off a big ACC win vs. Georgia Tech, talked to ESPN's Mark Schlabach and compared himself and backfield teammate James Davis to the backfield tandem of Reggie Bush and LenDale White, also known as Thunder & Lightning:

"That's where I see us right now," Spiller said. "We've got the same combination."

Fresh off their victory over Georgia Tech and Spiller's bold annointment of his backfield as the new kings of college football, how do you think the dynamic duo did Thursday night against Virginia Tech?

A combined 71 yards on 22 tries, in a 24-7 loss to Virginia Tech, the second for the Tigers on the season -- matching White & Bush's career loss total.

Spiller's got game (USC nearly landed him as a recruit -- and you know we don't pursue anything but Grade A Prime at this point) -- but he needs to learn to leave the premature comparisons up to moronic announcers and sportsblogging geeks.

Recruits to fall in line

The Trojans have landed 11 of the top 100 recruits in the nation. Texas has got 9. Florida has got 8. But there are 27 top 100 recruits still undecided, and USC is on the list of almost all of them, especially the big dogs.

Here's a run-down of potential players to welcome to the Trojan family:

<strike>5-star offensive lineman Andre Smith -
Supposively gave word to hometown favorite Alabama months ago, but he could be a signing day surprise.</strike> COMMITTED TO ALABAMA.

<strike>5-star defensive tackle Gerald McCoy -
This Oklahoma native would be a huge steal from Stoops.</strike> COMMITTED TO OKLAHOMA.

<strike>5-star running back C.J. Spiller -
A country boy from Florida. Can he and his family make the adjustment to big city living? Pete Carroll certainly made an impression on his mom. He could become the 2nd C.J. of the Trojans' 2006 recruiting class.</strike> COMMITTED TO CLEMSON.

5-star running back Stafon Johnson -
Straight out of Dorsey. This kid should be a lock to stay in LA. COMMITTED TO USC.

<strike>
5-star offensive lineman Stephen Schilling -
USC has a better chance at this guy then Andre Smith. Although the Trojans would like both after losing underclassmen Winston Justice and Fred Matua.</strike> COMMITTED TO MICHIGAN.

<strike>
4-star running back Michael Goodson -
This kid has Reggie Bush-like moves as evidenced in the Army All-American game.</strike> COMMITTED TO TEXAS A&M.

<strike>4-star running back LeSean McCoy -
Likely to remain home and attend Penn State, but he's still on the Trojans' radar since the Trojans' backfield will be playing on Sundays next season.</strike>COMMITTED TO MIAMI.

4-star linebacker Michael Morgan -
There's nothing like stealing top talent out of Texas. See Emmanuel Moody. COMMITTED TO USC.

<strike>
4-star defensive back Devin Ross -
Supposively the Trojans were out of the running, but are now back on the block.</strike> COMMITTED TO ARIZONA.

*All rankings based on Rivals.com
