Always nice to see the USC campus and surrounding area get some props, especially when the writer gets the details right. Here's a few of the choice bits from Sports Illustrated writer Arash Markazi's Road Trip to USC:

Best place to go after 2 a.m.: Chanos. It's not the best Mexican food in L.A., but it's the best you're going to get in the middle of the night around campus. Don't ask for the hours, because there are none -- Chanos closes when things slow down, and it hardly does with oversized burritos going for $3.
Best 'must-eat' item on campus: The famous bacon-wrapped hot dogs sold outside of the Coliseum are a USC institution. The carts often are surrounded by dozens who hope to get one of the delectable dogs before the carts disappear; police patrol the area looking for vendors without licenses. Breaking bread -- and the law -- never tasted so good.
Best pregame ritual: Get your early-bird drink on at the 9-0 or at one of the houses on The Row before you start your own Trojan Walk. Start by walking past the Shrine Auditorium, home of award shows like the Oscars, Emmys and Grammys for past 50 years. Walk across the street to campus and pay respect to Tommy Trojan, who stands gallantly next to the Student Union. Join in the ceremonial kicking of the flag poles on campus, then cross the street to Exposition Park and pass through the beautiful Rose Garden and Science Center before finally arriving at the famed peristyles in front of the Coliseum, where tailgates abound. Simply showing a "Fight On!" victory sign is usually good for a few beers.
Best thing to pack before going to the game: Um, beverage-holding binoculars. USC was the only Pac-10 school to serve alcohol at its home games for years, now the Coliseum is a dry this season. Most students have compensated by going at the beer pong extra hard before game time, but the ol' alky binocs have also been a favorite in the student section.
Best rite of passage for students: Any student with a discretionary card, which is basically money on your student ID, must go down to the on-campus bar in the basement of the student union called Traditions, or "Tradys," and use up their "discresh" on pitchers of beer, tequila shots and car bombs. While you get hammered, say a toast to your parents, who think the money they put on the card is going to nutritious meals or books for your classes.

oj-mayo-announcement.jpgFrom the too-good-to-be-true files:

"I just want to win, so if we come really, really close next year and are a player or two away and go out that summer and grab the pieces that we're missing, then of course I'll come back," Mayo said shortly after arriving on campus for his official visit. "I want to win at every level."

From Wednesday's L.A. Times:

Dwayne Polee Jr., a 6-foot-6 freshman guard, said Tuesday he has made a commitment to USC, even though he has yet to play in a high school basketball game and is only 14 years old.

Polee's father was a standout at Los Angeles Manual Arts and Pepperdine; he's been working out at USC on his own, and apparently fell in love with the school.

The commitment is non-binding, and Polee could change his mind, just like Taylor King of Mater Dei, who committed to UCLA early and then wound up signing with Duke. But Polee says he's certain about his choice, and will focus on refining his game and getting the grades he'll need to play for the Trojans.

From the Times Union:

...the University of Southern California tops my list, and not just because I spoke there earlier this month to MBA students. They've also got the football thing, of course, but the reason is the well-worn description of the alumni network that fits it perfectly: the Southern Cal Mafia.
I don't know if they take a blood oath to help, hire, mentor and generally take care of each other, but they act as if they do.

Couldn't have said it better.

oj-mayo.jpgDear Mr. Mayo --

We happened upon ESPN.com today, to check up on our fantasy baseball team's performance and see if any more NBA signings had been announced, when we stumbled upon this potentially life-changing, yet totally unconfirmed, news: it sounds like you're considering coming to USC:

O.J. Mayo, the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2007, told the USC coaching staff and players last week that he would commit to the Trojans, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

The 6-foot-4 Mayo, as recognizable a high school recruiting name as LeBron James and Greg Oden, made the statement while on his unofficial recruiting visit last week in Los Angeles. He still needs to make that sentiment public, though. He could do so as early as this weekend at the Reebok ABCD Camp on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson in Teaneck, N.J.

High school recruits often say one thing to a coaching staff to appease them and then sign somewhere else during the fall and spring signing periods, but multiple sources told ESPN.com that the Trojans simply are awaiting official word from Mayo. Even after he makes an announcement, though, the Trojans would have to hang on to his commitment until the November signing period.

Now please know -- we're not getting carried away or booking Final Four accomodations. We are well aware that:

(a) This is all totally unconfirmed by you. And even if you do come out and confirm it, we can't make anything official until November. Which is a long, long time that could be filled with plenty of temptations and distractions from all around the globe, from the way it sounds.

(b) The chances of you staying at SC for more than 1 year are zero. So while USC will be the center of the hoops universe for one season with you, they'll have to follow it up with other solid recruits to sustain a serious resurgence.

That being said, we've seen your game footage. We've talked to people who have seen you play. O.J., you come for one season, that's just fine by us.

Tragic news this morning -- Trojan starting point guard Ryan Francis was killed late last night in a shooting in Louisiana. According to Tim Tessalone, USC's director of sports information, the 19-year-old Francis was killed about 3:30 a.m. in Baton Rouge, where he was visiting his mother. No additional details are currently available.

Our utmost condolences go out to his family, his friends and his teammates.

Carolina_1Congrats to Tim Floyd and the mens' basketball program on their 74-59 victory over the 19th-ranked Tar Heels last night at the Sports Arena.

Lodrick Stewart and Nick Young led the Trojans with 18 points a piece. Gabe Pruitt added 16, and Ryan Francis kicked in another 12 points for USC.

It was the 8th straight victory for the Trojan men, and their first over a ranked opponent since March 2004.

I know there's already a lack of green spaces on campus, but I must propose this new monument by the von Kleinschmidt Center.
