Sixth-Year Unlikely

Fullback Brandon Hancock is leaning against returning for a sixth season. Hancock said he does not want to jeopardize his future health and recently met with a surgeon who is a family friend but will seek one more opinion regarding his past knee injuries before making an final decision not to return.
Last week the NCAA approved a sixth year for Hancock. USC already has his scholarship for next season because Hancock was going to pay for the fall semester himself.

Buehler... Buehler... Buehler?

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." --Ferris Bueller

Or John Griffin could punch you.

Buehler, known for being one of the most cheerful personalities on the team, got punched by walk-on tailback John Griffin during the running backs meeting before practice.

The running backs are apparently assigned seats in their meeting room and when Buehler told Griffin he was sitting in his chair, the scuffle started. Witnesses said Griffin threw several punches before being restrained by teammates.

David Buehler, a kicker, was recently assigned to some running back duties because of the injuries to fullbacks Brandon Hancock, Ryan Powdrell and Stanley Havili.

It's doubtful this altercation is going to raise the slim chances of either of these guys seeing the backside of Booty anytime soon.

Monday Morning QB: 09.18.06

Pete Carroll hosted his <strike>first</strike> second Monday Morning Quarterback Luncheon of the 2006 season to a packed house.

He talked about Powdrell's injury being terrible and how they had to actually set the ankle on the field. He will have a full recovery but it will take a while and they have an outside chance of getting a 6th year for him.

Ouch.

Brandon Hancock also spoke on Powdrell's replacement, saying that Stanley Havili has the most upside, but they are calling Mike Brittingham the human torpedo.

On the Husker touchdown it appeared as if Sartz was held on the play but it was not called. Carroll loved the fans in the stadium chanting, "Holding! Holding!"

The Huskers managed to stay close because of their conservative playing, and the refusal to give up the ball. The Trojans only managed one turnover, but had several called back because of penalties.

TrojanWire GRIDIRON UPDATES

Five days until kickoff in Fayetteville!

We have updated the TrojanWire gridiron (the NEWS BY PLAYER nav) according to the latest position battles.

First we need to talk about junior offensive guard Drew Radovich because we've never even mentioned him here before. Shame on us -- not even representing a good old boy from our hometown Orange County. Drew beat out Jeff Byers to become the starting left guard this fall. Byers will likely back up Ryan Kalil at center.

Terrell Thomas is back at corner after suffering a knee injury last year against Arkansas. Kevin Thomas or Cary Harris are listed as the second corners, but we are staying with the Thomas theme.

We are leaving the 4-3 set up on D and Kyle Moore as the second defensive end, but we could change that depending on how often we see Brian Cushing.

Oscar Lua is there at MLB because he is a team captain. Rey Maualuga will eventually supplant him though.

Chris Barrett and Fili Moala were actually listed as co-starters at defensive tackle. But we can only give the nod to one guy. Sorry Fili.

Saddleback JC transfer Ryan Powdrell takes over for Brandon Hancock in the three-point stance.

But what everyone wants to know is who will be the starting tailback? While it would be much easier to fit C.J. Gable's name in there, we came up with an abbreviation for the former math major, Chauncey Washington (C. Washington). Seems only fair. The guy deserves the benefit of the doubt if he says, "I'll be good for Arkansas."

Hancock Joins the KSPN 710 Team

While we're sure it doesn't compare to playing out his senior season, we're happy to hear that it only took Brandon Hancock a week to lock down an announcing gig following his MCL tear. According to the Daily News's Scott Wolf, Hancock will act as "a weekly contributor and insider, and will be a part of the pre-game show for the season-opener against Arkansas" on KSPN 710 in Los Angeles.

Hancock out for season

An MRI confirmed a torn ACL in fullback Brandon Hancock. He will be out for the season.

"It's a terrible thing. We've got Ryan Powdrell, Jody Adewale and Stanley Havili and maybe we can do some other things," said Coach Pete Carroll.

Hancock could redshirt another season, but this will be the second operation on his left knee, and he is a smart guy that may just focus on grad school and life beyond the football field.

In any case he'll probably be posting on his blog about his future.

Brandon Hancock on summer ball

USC's fullback who explains his role like this:

It takes a different breed to undertake the fullback role. It helps to have a thick forehead, too. You must constantly subject yourself to high speed collisions that rattle your skull and leave you swatting at gnats that don't really exist. You must be prone to violence, accept pain as your friend, and sacrifice your body so your teammate can make the ESPN highlight reel.

said:

It was great to see him [Mark Sanchez] reunited with the Trojan family, always infusing his upbeat attitude and personality into the workout.
