Coach Pete Carroll announced today that freshman Matt Barkley is the starting quarterback vs. San Jose St.

"It's clear to us as a staff that Matt Barkley is ready to be the starting quarterback at USC," Carroll said. "He has exceeded all our expectations. He has all the physical ability, he has the mentality and temperament to handle the position, his personality is very well received by all the players and he's extremely talented.

Barkley is the first true freshman quarterback to start a USC opener.

What a bad, bad, bad call here.

Dufresne's piece that summarizes it: 5 interceptions in a day versus 1 in the entirety of season's practice. It's crazed, what Carroll is doing. Unbelievably crazed.

The schedule alone is going to do in Barkley. He's going play San Jose State, light them up, then wrongly get it in his mind that the college game isn't that much quicker than what he is accustomed then promptly throw as many interceptions as Carroll will allow against OSU. At this point, it looks like Carroll might give him 20 before handing over the reins.

I like most people know that even our 3rd and 4th stringers can be the starter on most any team in the nation. I do worry about playing a soft team like SJ State, then the real test against The Ohio State Buckeye's, then we will see what he's made of! As for his scrimmage interceptions, we will still have one of the premier defense's in the country! Will he go up against a defense as tough as ours in game situation? We will have to see. The way Pete practices with the competition factor, it's up to Matt to stay on top!
So to answer the original question... Yes! I like the decision to go with Matt, I myself live in Orange County and cannot lose here!
You gotta' love those O.C. Quarteback's! See you September 5th
FIGHT ON!
